Legal services available
to students in Union
From staff reports
l So you finally found the dream
apartment you've been looking for.
You know you're being hasty, but you
just have to live there, so you sign the
lease without reading the fine print.
I- Later you learn it has an automatic
renewal charge and a $50 service
charge for the beer cellar. You know
Pad isn't going to like this very much!
What's a student to do? Well, for
garters, students can take the lease to
Student Legal Services offers free legal
advice on almost any subject and
provides free court representation for
.students who have landlord problems,
triinor consumer problems, or those
who need expunction or want to settle
an uncontested divorce.
SLS is made up of three attorneys,
headed by director Dorothy Bernholz,
who are available to help students
solve minor legal problems. The legal
service counsels students on subjects
ranging from driving under the in
fluence to credit problems.
Students who want to file suit
against another student or the State of
North Carolina can not use SLS be
cause of a conflict of interest: they are
employed by the State and represent
all UNC students.
The SLS office, in Room 222 of the
Union, can be reached at 962-1303.
Resident assistants ease roommate conflicts 1
From staff reports
Unless you come from a family like
The Waltons and had to pack your seven
brothers and sisters in one room, you
may have to adjust to one of the more
challenging aspects of college life: living
with a roommate.
Picture this: moving in with someone
you have never met and finding out that
they stay up until all hours of the night
and think a clean room is only for the
pages of Better Homes and Gardens.
Fortunately, that's where your resi
dent assistant (RA) comes in.
When two people live in the close
confines of a residence hall room,
conflicts are bound to arise. These
conflicts (or major wars) may erupt
from trivial arguments, such as who
gets to watch The Flinstones or Guiding
- Light, or they may be grounded in much
more serious personality andor cultural
differences.
These problems can often be worked
out with the help of the housing staff
if not the RAs, then the assistant area
directors or area directors. But the im
portant thing is that there are people
around to help settle such disputes if
two people cannot handle the problems
between themselves.
"RAs are at the University to make it
more of a home. It roommates have
problems they mediate and help work
out the situation and make it more
pleasant," said Eric Chasse, who was an
RA in Hinton James Residence Hall for
two years.
Each RA also plans programs on
their floor and in their building. They
must prepare three programs (two aca-

demic and one social) each semester.
Some popular programs RAs schedule
include massage workshops, ice cream
socials and discussions of dating and
relationships.
RAs must also be prepared to be
friends to freshman entering the Uni
versity, Chasse said. "A freshman
coming into a building is never alone,"
he said. 'The RA will know who they
are from the moment they enter the
building and leave. This can be very
comforting to a student, especially an
incoming freshman."
If freshmen can't work out problems
with their roommates, they can try to
change rooms or dormitories. If no
agreement can be reached, they can fill
out a RoomArea Change Application.'
Room changes will not be considered
for the first 1 0 days of a semester. When
rooms are available, changes will be
considered after the applicant meets
with an area director.
