Workers started rebuilding the 70- year-old house Aug. 14. The fire was started by a short circuit in a refrigerator extension cord. "Hopefully, it will look like new when it's done," said Paul Elam, Zeta Psi president. I: m m m m m i a a I i m i I A aUNC 1 Outing 1 Club 1 IW! Ifli, k The fraternity will suffer as long as the house is uninhabitable, Elam said. "The time factor is working against us: rush will be hurt if we don't have a house." The fraternity received $150,000 in insurance money and has used some of it to gut the house after the smoke and water damage. "The house is just a shell right now basically," Elam said. Fraternity members are trying to raise the rest of the money needed for the renovations, about $300,000, by asking alumni to pledge money over a period of four years as part of the Zet Rebuild Program, he said. Members have traveled to towns where many alumni are located. "Alumni have helped us in the past when the house was in bad shape," Elam said. If all the money is not raised in time to complete the house, the fraternity will take out a loan against the money pledged by the alumni, he said. Last year, the fraternity rented a house on Mallette Street after the fire. Rush activities this semester will be held in a variety of places, such as members' houses and restaurants, Elam said. ill o Go take a hike or climb a rock MM B -.v- r i Jk v - fe - - ..wi.-.- OR GO canoeing X country skiing caving hang gliding Beginners are encouraged to participate! Huiignlc's University Mall cxp 10-31-90 H offers expanded services By STACEY KAPLAN Staff Writer Student Health's new Urgent Care Service began operation on August 1 3 to provide students access to emergency medical care when the clinics are closed and the prob lem cannot wait for an appointment. Ann Evans, associate director of Urgent Care, said this new service would give students better and faster care during evening and weekend hours because a nurse practitioner (NP) or physician assistant (PA) would be on duty, rather than just nurses. In the past, students with urgent medical needs were asked to come back the next day, or were referred to North Carolina Memo rial Hospital's emergency room. "The number of return visits will be reduced," Evans said. Previously, nurses would tell people to return the next day if it was not appropriate to call a physician, but now more comprehensive care can be given immediately, she said. The new service will require a $ 1 0 fee for each visit to offset some of the costs of the services, Evans said. "Most emergency rooms charge a flat fee of $100, so this is not an unreasonable charge for the level of care provided." Judith Cowan, Student Health Service's medical director, said the NPs and PAs are not physicians, but because of their greater level of expertise they can give a more in depth evaluation than was previ ously available from the nurses. Also, physicians are always on call. "The nurse practitioners and physician assistants are physician extenders licensed by the board of medical examiners to diagnose and treat a number of medical illnesses," she said. "Their practice is carefully controlled and spelled out, so they know to call a physician if they can't handle something." Evans said this expansion of ser vices was unique. "Other depart ments of Student Health have been trimming their services, but we are staying open 24 hours and adding a new level of service. .
