THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1990 THE DAILY TAR HEEL WEEKEND MAGAZINE OMNIBUS Clubs give students a chance to participate The IM-REC office is not only in charge of intramural sports, it also heads up club sports at Carolina. "Club sports are a student organization," said Rick Satterlee, assis' tant director for club sports. "Every club is led by students. "The clubs give many students the opportunity to participate in sports they may have played in high school and the opportunity to administer their own clubs. Where they had coaches and athletic directors in high school, here each president is in responsible for his own club's schedule and practice time." While entry fees, equipment, and league dues for club sports are covered by student fees, Satterlee said that the clubs are not a complete handout. "The clubs are well-supported," he said. "They do a lot of their own fund-raising for travel expenses when they play away from Carolina." Approximately 29 club sports abound on campus for students. These range from competitive sports such as rugby, men's and women's soccer, and baseball sports which play in leagues against other clubs to recreational sports like the waterski and outing clubs. Mike Jones, a junior from Hope Mills, joined the outing club last year. "I'd never been canoeing or rock climbing before," he said, "so I thought that while I was in college it would be a good chance to get exposed to those things." Jones said the club, which meets every Thursday at 7p.m. and has a membership of about 100, is "basically a forum to get people interested in outdoor activities to get together and relax." And how does the club relax? "We usually try to take at least one trip a weekend," Jones said. "Canoeing, mountain climbing, windsurfing." The club is also planning a hang-gliding trip for the first weekend in November. Club dues are $25 a year, but according to Jones, "if you go on just one canoeing trip it's worth it because you'd spend more than that going to an outfitter." Jones said the club raises additional money through t-shirt and frisbee sales. "The real advantage to the outing club is the number of experienced leaders in the club," Jones said. "You don't have to know what you're doing to join. You learn how. "On my first trip last year, we paddled down the Cape Fear. Ross Whitaker taught us techniques and strokes. Just recently, Ryutarou Ohbuchi showed slides on rock climbing. They're really experienced." 1 is i ; f vl T3 Wimbledon in America?
