The Daily Tar HeelFriday, November 16, 19907 sroisiYs Swimming swept by Florida in Koury The University of Florida swept the UNC men's and women's swimming teams Thursday, dropping the men to 1 -1 on the season and the women to 2-1. In the men's bracket, Florida won nine of 13 events, compiling 146 points to UNC's 97. Nunzio Esposto won both the one- and three-meter diving for the Tar Heels, while senior David Monasterio took the 500-meter freestyle and Tod Schroeder won the 50 free. The No. 13 Tar Heel women fared even worse, winning only three of 13 events for 118 points to the No. 7 Gators 182. UNC's Susan Leupold won the 200 butterfly, Heather Cleevely won the one-meter diving and Theresa Seastrom swept the three-meter title. Athletes in Action top UNC women's hoops In exhibition action Thursday night in Carmichael Auditorium, the North Carolina women's basketball team fell to Athletes in Action 80-76 despite sophomore Heather Thompson's 16 points and 11 rebounds. UNC senior center Kim Oden tossed in 14 points and pulled down 10 boards. Brown says LSU job not a consideration LSU football coach Mike Archer announced Thursday that he will leave his position as head football coach at the end of the 1990 season. Baton Rouge TV station WBRZ reported Wednes day that LSU would fire Archer and that UNC head coach Mack Brown was the front-runner as Archer's replacement. LSU officials denied that Archer's fate had been decided and expressed regret at his decision to leave. Brown also denied Wednesday's rumor, saying Archer was a friend and he was not considering the job. "I'm very happy at North Carolina," Brown said. "It's a compliment that anybody ever mentions your name simply because our program is im proving. My plans are to be at North Carolina for a long, long time. Right now, I don't want to do anything but focus on the Duke game and this is simply a distraction." Gonzales said Wormy solicited sex from two undercover officers who bad taken the place of prostitutes after policehad shutdown an escort service. Worthy had contacted the escort service and requested that two women meet him in his hotel room, said police spokesman Richard Retz. Retz said that after Worthy told the undercover officers what sex acts he wanted performed and how much he would pay, he was arrested. "Only then did they find out who he was,' Retz said, : Worthy was being held apart from Heels want to bowl oyer Bwke UNC's postseason hopes ride on win By WARREN HYNES Staff Writer If UNC can just beat Duke Saturday, the Tar Heels will be on their way to a Stop right there! Don't say that nasty word. Do you want your mouth washed out with soap? "We do not want to hear the term 'bowl' mentioned again," UNC head coach Mack Brown said this week. So there. Although Brown may appear to be over-sensitive, he does have two solid reasons for banning the word's use by his team. One reason is the fact that the UNC coach does not see postseason play as his team's top incentive to win this week. Rather, it is to finish with a record above .500 "It's important to this team to have a winning season, because that's some thing that has only been done once in the last seven years (by a UNC team)," he said. Another reason is that if UNC looks too far into the future, it may lose sight of the present namely, the Duke Blue Devils, Saturday at 12:10 p.m. in Wallace Wade Stadium. The Tar Heels (5-4-1, 2-3-1 in the ACC) square off with the arch-rival Blue Devils (4-6, 1-5 in the ACC) in a matchup that looks to be quite different from last year's. On Nov. 18, 1989, the Blue Devils, co-ACC champions for the first time since 1962, marched into Chapel Hill and pounded unmercifully on UNC. In a 41-0 rout, former Duke coach Steve Spurrier ran up the score with an un ceasing air attack and uncalled-for trick plays. The Blue Devils piled on 656 total yards, 479 of those passing. It put a painful end to an already dismal UNC season. One year later, however, things are different: The Blue Devils have taken a mighty fall, and the Tar Heels have certainly risen a few notches. After last season, Spurrier left town to take the head coaching duties at Florida. However, the man who turned the Duke football program around wasn't the only one to gallop out of Durham. Worthy, 29, was released from the Houston City jail at 7:10 p.m. The Laker's game with the Houston Rockets started at 7:30 p.m., and Sam Perkins was in Worthy's starting spot. Worthy reported to the Summit at the end of the first quarter and entered the game with 9:33 in the half after shaking hands with his teammates. The Lakers were unavailable for comment. The 6-foot-9, 225-pound Worthy was selected by the Lakers in the first round of the 1982 college draft after leading UNC to the national champi onship with a career-high 28 points against Georgetown in the finals. The Gastonia native and his wife Angela a former UNC cheerleader, had their first child last March. Dwight Hollier The graduation of three starting line men and four starting linebackers left first-year coach Barry Wilson with a gaping hole on defense. The Blue Devils are last in the ACC in rushing defense, having allowed 225.7 yards per game on the ground. Although an experienced secondary has held opponents to 151.7 yards passing per game (second in the league), Duke's ineptitude at stopping the run has placed the team seventh in the conference in total defense. The Tar Heels will likely counter with a running game that has been solid, if not spectacular. Tailbacks Natrone Means (593 yards, 4.5 per carry) and Eric Blount (338 yards, 3.9 per carry) should carry a large part of the UNC offense. When the Tar Heels go to the air, Brown has noted that either Todd Burnett or Chuckie Burnette may be delivering the pigskin. Brown has not left the quarterback position in question since the N.C. Saturday, UNC plays Colo rado College at 11 a.m., Santa Clara battles Connecticut at 2 p.m., and the winners will play 1 p.m. Sunday for the national championship. UNC has never lost at home, going 104-0-2 and outscoring the opposition 640 to 36. However, the Tar Heels have shown they are mortal this season, losing 3-2 to Connecticut Sept. 22 and escap ing against N.C. State in overtime last Sunday. But traditionally, tourney time is when this team comes to play. Seeking their ninth title in 1 0 tries, the Tar Heels should be the odds-on favorites. That's not to imply that there is no competition for UNC in the finals. UNC has squared off against Colo rado seven times since 1985, including three times in the Final Four. Their most recent confrontation was the 1989 scored 13 points in the last two games, must be ignited by someone.. "We need somebody to give us that spark offensively," Brown said. "We've got to improve to have a chance to beat Duke." The Duke offense is by no means lacking in passing punch, ranking third in the ACC in air attack. The quarterback duo of B illy Ray and Dave Brown gives the Blue Devils a comfort that most teams don't have. "Duke probably has the best combi nation of two quarterbacks in America," Brown said. "A lot of people are struggling to find one. Duke has two. They're proven winners." Ray, second in the ACC in passing efficiency, went down with an injury in last week's loss to N.C. State. Wilson is uncertain whether the senior will be able to play in his final collegiate game. "He's very tender, very sore, very stiff and I honestly have no idea if he'll be able to play," Wilson said. "It will basically be a matter of going through the warmups Saturday and seeing what he can do, if he can do anything." Should Ray be unavailable, Dave Brown should slip comfortably into position as Duke's offensive leader. The junior has been inconsistent so far in 1990, but was at the helm for last season's rout of UNC, when he set the school record for most yards passing in one game. The top receiving targets for the Blue Devils are tailback Randy Cuthbert (41 receptions), tight end Aaron Shaw (35) and wide receiver Marc Mays (3 1 ). The Blue Devils' rushing game has run aground this year, ranking seventh in the conference. Cuthbert, a 6-foot-3 junior, has run for only 5 1 8 yards this year after scrambling for 1 ,023 last sea son. This will mark the third time this season these two conference foes meet. Not the least of which is his country's political climate. Questioned about the Tar Heels' upcoming exhibition game against the West German National team, Rodl quickly gave the recent upheaval in Germany an athletic perspective. "(It is the) German team," the 6-foot-7 shooting guard said. "There is not a West Germany anymore." The Germans bring years of bas ketball experience to the Smith Center Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Rodl knows he played with the team this summer. For five highly-touted North Caro lina newcomers Eric Montross, Derrick Phelps, Brian Reese, Pat Sullivan, Cliff Rozier and redshirt freshman Kevin Salvadori, the game will be a coming-out party. Where do the freshmen fit in the 1990-91 scheme? "Coach Smith is going to look for the guys who are not going to hurt us on the court," Fox said.
