Name

is a distinctive association of that name
with Chapel Hill."
Alumni are the most ardent support
ers of the bill. Donald Boulton, vice
chancellor for student affairs, said: "I've
been hearing that debate for all the 19
years I've been here. It's an emotional
issue. It's something that means a great
deal to the alumni of this institution."
But some members of the University
community oppose the bill.
J. P. Regan, a sophomore from
Lumberton, said: "I think they should
leave it Chapel Hill because the name
Chapel Hill for so long has meant pres
tige." Former University President William
Friday said, "I think it's a mistake. It's
Graduate
a change that does not reflect the inter
ests of Dr. (Frank Porter) Graham."
Graham, who is a UNC alumnus, is
one of the most prominent past presi
dents of the University.
Others said they oppose the bill be
cause changing the name could damage
relations between the schools that have
University of North Carolina in their
name.
Halona Chavis, a freshman nursing
major, said, "People already take it
(UNC) for granted, but I like University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to be
definite, so it won't seem arrogant, as
we're already supposed to be."
Boulton said, "I recognize that we're
all sister institutions. I don't know

Richard Danek is a second-year
graduate student who is completing his
master's degree in speech communica
tion. "I enjoy being a graduate student,"
Danek said. "It gives me a chance to
work with the professors more closely.
"I also am able to study more of the
subjects which I'm really interested in,"
he said.
Right now, Danek is working on his
graduate thesis. "The thesis is the last
big hurdle of graduate school," Danek
said.

After completing his thesis, Danek
will attend law school at UNC.
Only three of the many different
graduate students at UNC, Nittoli, Roper
and Danek all agree their lives are very
different from the life of a typical un
dergraduate student. They all hope, how
ever, to be able to work with under
graduates in a constructive manner
inside or outside the classroom to
accomplish their goals.

would revert to the state treasury. Un

reverts to the state.
Lee said he thought the bill had a
good chance of passing in the Senate
but that he couldn't speculate on its
chances in the N.C. House. "I'm fairly
confident it will get a good hearing."
The bill is scheduled to be heard in
the Senate committee on higher educa

CH Chancellor Paul Hardin, N.C. State
Chancellor Larry Monteith, UNC-Char-lotte
Chancellor James Woodward,
UNC system president CD. Spangler
and one or two members of the BOG are
scheduled to testify at the hearing.
Ben Tuchi, UNC-CH vice chancel

hoped the bill would pass.
"We're hopeful," he said. "I've not
talked to any legislator about it and I
don't believe the chancellor has either,
so I can't give a reading of the bill's
chances for success."
