8The Daily Tar HeelWednesday, April 24, 1991 r TUNC offensive tackle Doimaley drafted by Oilers in 3rd round: Staff and wire reports Former North Carolina offensive tackle Kevin Donnalley was selected by the Houston Oilers as the 79th pick in the National Football League draft Sunday. Donnalley, a 6-foot-5, 293-pound senior from Raleigh, was chosen in the third round by Houston in a pick the Oilers received from the Miami Dol phins. The burly co-captain started at left tackle in both the 1989 and 1990 sea sons for the Tar Heels. He played an integral role in UNC's improvement from a 1-10 record in 1989 to a 6-4-1 mark in 1990. He is the second in his family to jump from UNC to the NFL. Rick Donnalley, an all-ACC center at UNC in 1980, played with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Kansas City Chiefs. Women's hoops reaps recruits Stephanie Lawrence, Miss Basket ball in the state of Georgia, and Char lotte Smith, a first-team all-stater from Shelby, highlight a class of five Tar Heel women's basketball signees look ing to lead UNC out of the ACC cellar in 1991-92. UNC's other recruits are: Gwendolyn Gillingham, a 6-foot-7 All-San Anto nio center from Floreseville, Texas; Jill Suddreth, a second-team all-state guard from Granite Falls; and Tonya Jackson, a 6-1 forward from Conway, S.C., who averaged 21 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocks a game in 1990-91 enough to earn her South Carolina 4-A-player-of-the-year honors. Lawrence led Morrow High School in Jonesboro, Ga., to three straight state championships, including a perfect 32 0 record this season a year in which the 6-0 guardforward shot 48 percent from behind the 3-point line. Smith, the nephew of former NBA great David Thompson, averaged 25 points, 14 rebounds and four steals per game for Shelby High School in 1990 91. The 6-0 forward is reputed to be capable of dunking something that has never been done in a regular-season women's college game. Syracuse's Owens jumps to NBA SYRACUSE, N.Y. All-America forward Billy Owens said today he will pass up his final year of eligibility at Syracuse to enter the NBA draft. "It was a hard decision, but I feel I'm ready for the next level," he said at an afternoon news conference. Owens said that the prospect of signing a big-money contract as one of the top picks was not the deciding factor in entering the draft. "I'm not really in it for the money," he said. "My dream was to be an NBA player, just to put an NBA uniform on." The Big East Conference's player of the year in 1990-91, Owens averaged 23.3 points, 11.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1 .2 blocked shots a game last sea son. Owens started all 103 games of his Syracuse career, finishing among the school's career leaders in every major category. His 1,818 points were sev enth best in school history and left Owens as the second highest-scoring third-year player behind Dave Bing. "He's going to be very high in the draft," New Jersey Nets' senior vice president Willis Reed said. "You can never tell. He could be No. 1 ." Owens joins sophomore guard Kenny Anderson of Georgia Tech and juniors Terrell Brandon of Oregon and center Brian Williams of Arizona as under classmen who announced for the NBA draft. Phillies give Leyva early exit ; PHILADELPHIA Nick Leyva was fired today as manager of the Phila delphia Phillies just 13 games into the season and was replaced by J im Fregosi . It was the second fastest firing .in baseball history. In 1 988, the year Bal timore lost its first 2 1 games, the Ori oles fired Cal Ripken Sr. six games into the season. Ripken was replaced by Frank Robinson. The Phillies opened this season 4-9 and looked like a loser. They had a 4.77 earned run average, wild pitches galore and made 15 errors.
