She gets the chance on ABC's "Civil Wars," playing Sydney Guilford, a suc cessful Manhattan divorce lawyer whose personal life is a shambles. The Wednesday night show from Steven Bochco Productions, which brought you "L.A. Law," is the 30-year-old actress's first television series after a movie career of less mature roles. "This helps me to change my image and get out there as an adult," Hemingway said. "I think many people, particularly producers and directors, had put me in a time warp and thought of me only as the girl in 'Manhattan' or 'Per sonal Best' or 'Star 80.' I've done a lot since then ... but I don't think the mes sage got out plus, I took a lot of time out to have children. What better oppor tunity to let people know I've grown up than in a quality television series." "Civil Wars" also stars Peter Onorati, last seen as the bad cop in another Bochco show, "Cop Rock." He becomes Sydney's new associate after her first partner suffers a nervous breakdown because of overwork. At first, Hemingway said she resisted reading the pilot script because she didn't want to do a series. But when her agent persuaded her to read it, she said, the writing was so good that she immedi ately met with the producers. "You think divorce lawyers it's going to be the divorce of the week," Hemingway said. "But it's really fasci nating. You deal with how people fall in love, then why they fall out of love. What happens is that divorce causes a tremendous upheaval in your life. People you think you know suddenly do sur prising things. Sydney examines these people, but it hasn't helped her own personal life." One of the things she likes about her character is that she isn't perfect. "She'd be a bore to play if she was," Hemingway said. "I think the fact that she can be successful on one side and unsuccessful in her personal life makes it interesting.
