The Daily Tar HeelMonday, February 10, 19929 Letters endorse candidates Honesty, credentials make Shelburne right candidate To the editor: If you're the type of person that loathes campus politics, then you're the type of person who shou Id take a second look at Mark Shelburne. We are two people who do not like typical campus politicians; nonetheless, we are excited to be able to endorse Mark for student body president. Mark is undoubtedly qualified for the position. But you can look anywhere for his credentials let us tell you about him. We have gone to school with Mark collectively for 19 years. He is one of the most honest, sincere and genuinely caring people we know. He is truly concerned about your needs and inter ests. Mark has been active in many different organizations such as rugby. Student Congress and his fraternity, as well as being a noteworthy scholar. Mark's familiarity with so many as pects of campus life means that he knows Carolina in ways someone that has been sheltered in a government office can't. : Mark is always accessible and will listen to your concerns. He is a man of strong opinion, yet he is willing to take your recommendations seriously, and when he makes a decision, he considers all sides of an issue and chooses what ever solution will benefit the greatest number of people. As student body presi dent, Mark would be committed to see ing his plans through, because he be lieves that they are in the best interest of all the students. Anyone who has ever seen Mark play rugby or debate an issue knows he is dedicated to accomplishing his goals. He will tackle any challenge head on and is committed to doing everything in his power to get a job done. Think about the qualities that you want to set in your president. You will find these qualities in Mark. In addition to presenting to you an outstanding politician, we are present ing you an extraordinarily good man. Mark is the type of individual that ex emplifies the highest quality both aca demically and personally and is some one who not only cares about political issues, but will care about you. For more reasons than we could ever list here, we are proud to give our endorse ment to Mark Shelburne for the office of student body president. ' KRISTEN PAIGE ALEXANDER Junior English WILLIAM ALEXANDER 'GRAHAM IV Junior Biology Shelburne rolls up sleeves to solve campus problems To the editor: Pick up a newspaper, and you'll prob ably see a headline alerting you to the most recent casualties in the ever-present budget crisis, the latest flare-up of cam pus racial hostilities and the newest episode illustrating tension between administrators and students. Some stu dents feel frustrated, even to the point of discouragement, about our prospects for solving the seemingly insurmount able problems that plague UNC. But Mark Shelbume is the candidate who's willing to roll up his sleeves and fix the problems. Since his first semester at UNC when he began to work for student govern ment, Mark has proven his effective ness as an advocate for student con cerns. Earlier this year, Mark proposed an innovative plan to Student Congress that would have raised much-needed funding for our ailing libraries. The proposal did not pass, but Mark did not wallow in defeat. When discussing his plan, hedidn't alter hisopiniontogratify his listeners. But, at the same time, he remained flexible to change. Mark lis tened thoughtfully to everyone and made improvements accordingly. Mark is continuing to think of ways that stu dents can help our libraries. In the more than two years that we've known Mark, he has always been a sincere and genuine friend. He truly cares about what is happening to this university, and he has al waysacted with honesty and integrity. His ethics are unquestionable. Though Mark has been an active member of Student Congress since his freshman year, he has remained apart from the political mudslinging and immaturity that have hindered that institution's progress. In his term as chairman of the Rules and Judiciary Committee, Mark never used his pow erful position for personal gain or to settle petty grievances with other con gress members. Mark knows student government can be a positive force on campus only if its members act with concern for the greater good. IfyoumeetMark.you'llbeimpressed by his approachability and his willing ness to listen and really consider your ideas. Call him, visit him in Suite C, stop him when you see him on campus. He'll be happy to listen to your ques tions and opinions about his platform and student government. But most of all, visit the polls and vote for him tomorrow. TRACY LAWSON Senior Political Science JEN PILLA Junior Political ScienceEconomics Results as RHA president speak highly of Peeler To the editor: "Don't tell me what you have done. Show me what yon are going to do. " There is perhaps no quote which bet ter sums up the spirit of this year's election. In a year when many student body president candidates are talking more about past successes than about student concerns, there is one candidate who has stayed focused on the issues Scott Peeler. Between the two of us, we have two years of student government experi ence and six years of residence hall government experience. During that time we have watched many students serve as leaders of this campus some very good, some not so good. There is no question in our minds, however, that Scott Peeler has been one of the most effective leaders on this campus in the past few years. His experience this year as RHA co-president has given him the opportunity to form relationships with those administrators with whom he will be working as student body president. It also has given him the insight and sen sitivity to recognize those issues and concerns which will affect students all over this campus in the next year. Scott's commitment to recycling on this campus is unparalleled. In the past year he has worked closely with TAr Heel Recycling Program to improve both the quality and quantity of recy cling in the residence halls. Now, he wants to do the same for classroom buildings. Placing recycling bins on the first floor of classrooms will improve greatly the effectiveness of recycling on this campus. Another item that will affect students in the upcoming year is student fees. Scott has pledged not to raise student fees unless it is absolutely necessary, and only if all other funding options have been exhausted. It is only through a commitment like this that students' interests will be protected, and students will continue to receive a high-quality education at an affordable price. What sets Scott apart from all the other student body president candidates are his high standardsof ethics and solid ideas for student government. He not only has realistic ideas, but also a fea sible plan to accomplish each one something you will not find from any of the other candidates. Join us on Feb. 1 1 in voting for the one person who will make a difference on this campus next year, Scott Peeler. " NICKFRANZESE Senior Business Administration SUSAN WARD Senior Speech Communications Administrative ties make Peeler strongest candidate To the editor: We write this letter today, because it is essential that students recognize the importance of their vote this Tuesday, especially for the office of student body president. It is clear that one candidate stands out from the rest because of his integrity, honesty, dedication and abil ity Scott Peeler. Having worked closely with Scott, we believe students should know he listens and responds to people's needs. In short, he makes things happen. We have also seen firsthand how Scott deals with administrators, such as Chancellor Paul Hardin. More than any other candidate, Scott has developed an excellent working relationship with the University administration to the benefit of every student. While other candi dates speak of connections in Raleigh, we think that solid connections right here in Chapel Hill have greater impact on student life. Scott is also dedicated to and has actively pursued issues that concern every student. He played a key role in the Residence Hall Association's Ra cial Diversity Proposal that has recently become a part of housing policy. This program will afford African-American students the opportunity to develop a strong, viable community on North Campus. Furthermore, Scott worked hard to ensure that no student would be displaced or forced to move because of this proposal. For more than a decade, many students had called for action and because of Scott's dedication as RHA co-president, that call has finally been answered. We are convinced of Scott's per sonal commitment to actively challeng ing the administration to establish a free-standing Sonja H. Stone Black Cultural Center. The tone that has been set by Matt Heyd must be continued, and the administration must move for ward on the issue. We need a student body president who will stay the course until the struggle has been won. Finally, as two students who have worked hard to change the face of this university, we urge each of our fellow students to vote in Tuesday's election. For us the choice is clear vote for Scott Peeler for student body president. HEATHER LYNCH Senior B iologyAnthropoIogy SCOTT WILKENS Junior Political ScienceEconomics Moody avoids the politics, understands students' view To the editor: John Moody doesn't have the "expe rience" of the useless committees and bureaucracy that have characterized stu dent government in past years. He is simply a student like you and me who despises the politics of student government and now wants to do some thing about it. John has avoided the ethical debates, mudslinging and controversy of this campaign. Nobody has ever questioned John's ethics or integrity. John has run a quiet, issues-based campaign, because he simply has the best platform. Every candidate complains about the increase in student fees. John is the only candidate who will donate his $1,200 stipend to a.p.p.I.e.s. He also wants to eliminate the $12,908 of your student fees that student government leaders "earn." A pot of about $10,000 called the "Student Opportunity Fund" is sit ting there doing nothing. John wants to combine the two five-figure numbers and use $23,000 of your money that is now wasted! John has the best plan for combating the budget crisis. Instead of embarking on a fruitless grassroots campaign or misguided complaining, John will go directly to the people in state govern ment who have the power to make changes. The General Assembly, sena tors and Gov. Jim Martin will know John Moody. Additionally, John is the only candidate focusing on re-allocating the "state education" money that goes from Raleigh to private universi ties like DOOK (and even out-of-state institutions like Georgetown). Finally, we have a candidate dedi cated to improving the relationship be tween the University community and all minorities. Only John proposes a free-standing multicultural center that includes the BCC as its major tenant and space for all groups on campus dedicated to reducing racial tension. John recognizes that the University and the building must address the needs of all minorities. Additionally, while stu dent leaders planned marches and ral lies at a meeting to get an African American Department, none of them knew who makes this decision. The next day, John went to Wilson Library, found out and began working in the right direction to get this done. Obviously, John has the best plans to deal with the major issues. UNC stu dents rallied behind the Tar Heels for the big game. Now we must rally be hind John Moody to elect a student body president who will win huge vic tories for Carolina. Go Heels: Vote for John Moody. HUBERT DAVIS Senior Criminal Justice Major Moody only candidate to address graduate needs To the editor: As current president of the Graduate and Professional Student Federation, I was concerned with who is running for student body president. After evaluat ing all of the candidates, I have become most impressed with John Moody and his ability to listen. He was the only candidate to attend several GPSF meet ings to listen to the needs of graduate students before making his platform. John is dedicated to making the GPSF president another vice president to the student body president, increasing the paltry 15 percent of graduate fees that are allocated specifically to graduates to 50 percent and securing better health insurance for graduate students. After listening, John unlike other campus politicians with whom I have worked acts. His style is not to form impotent ad hoc, blue-ribbon task forces and committees, but rather to forcefully pursue approval for these concerns by directly working with the people (ad ministration, state legislators) who have the power to make these changes. As GPSF president, I feel that John Moody is more dedicated than any other stu dent body president candidate to ad dressing and following through on the needs of graduate students. Additionally, I spent two years as an undergraduate at Carolina and know that John will tackle the "big" issues of the budget crisis and race relations more fervently than anyone. He will also act to remedy many of the quality-of-life issues that others choose to ignore. For instance, he is frustrated with Marriott's ability to "coerce" on-campus students to buy $ 100 worth of food each semes ter, the lack of lighting and recycling on campus and the Union Station closing before Davis Library. Already, John is working with the UNC Department of Transportation to add more bike racks and has gained approval from the regis trar for an improved exam schedule that greatly reduces the number of 8 a.m. exams and students with two exams in one day. I am very excited that John is running for student body president. He is the first candidate in my four years at UNC who represents the student perspective outside of the campus political genre. He is running not because he has any future political aspirations, but because like most students, he is frustrated with student governments that plan speeches and marches instead of solving prob lems. Consider the candidates carefully, and then support your candidate vo for student body president cally and with your vote, as I am doing with John Moody. JANE E. ROPER Graduate Business Bibbs' experience portrays his care for University To the editor: There isajob opening at Carolina one of the most significant a student can hold. There are five applicants. With respect for all the candidates and affir mation of their abilities, we encourage you to compare their experience and accomplishments. Without exception, Mark Bibbs has outstanding qualifica tions. Without exception, Bibbs has unparalleled experience. Through con crete achievements, Mark has clearly demonstrated his sincere commitment to improving the quality of life at Caro lina. Compare thecandidates' ideas. Mark has a comprehensive, solid and realistic vision of what we, as students, can achieve. Mark Bibbs has mastered the difficult task of accomplishing goals important, long-term goals. Signifi cantly, Mark secured a permanent seat for students on the UNC Board of Gov ernors, a position that will continue to benefit students long after we graduate. Mark has cultivated a strong rela tionship with UNC administrators. In addition, he has developed a rapport with key North Carolina legislators. Quite frankly, the importance of these relationships cannot be overstated. Bibbs has consistently exposed himself to the workings of the machines that control Carolina ... our General As sembly and our Board of Governors. Nothing significant happens at UNC without the approval of these men and women. NOTHING. Mark has a mature, long-term vision for the office of student body president. Mark will cultivate the minds and lead ership potential of Carolina's younger students, while utilizing the talents and experience of upperclassmen and gradu ate students. His desire is to produce mature and capable leaders who are trained in the workings of a large public university. Get to know Mark Bibbs. He has turned ideas into concrete accomplish ments. He knows how to overcome ad versity and build consensus. He sees no impossibilities. His thorough knowl edge of the past and present of our university and the possibilities he envisions for service as student body , president will produce both immedi ate and long-term benefits. Mark Bibbs is a strong leader. He is honest and approachable. He has strong convictions and is deeply committed to the students of Carolina. We ask that you join us in electing Mark to the office of student body president. ERIC LEVINSON Third-year law JENNIFER LLOYD Sophomore Political SciencePsychology Bibbs' perseverance will make him best president To the editor: The race is not given to the swift, nor to the strong, but rather to the one who can endure until the end. It takes persis tence, patience and a strong determina tion to accomplish goals, no matter what obstacles must be overcome. During the past two years, Mark Bibbs has proven that he can fight the good fight and be flexible while consistently pre serving the interests of those he repre sents. Without question, he is the most ex perienced and most capable candidate for student body president. Bibbs has consistently demonstrated his leader ship ability by meeting diverse student CAA candidate endorsed Kirincich brings knowledge, experience to bid for CAA To the editor: Election time is here again, and this year, I would like to encourage every one to vote for Tracy Kirincich for Carolina Athletic Association president. Tracy's list of accomplishments is im pressive. As a sophomore, she served in the CAA Cabinet as fund-raising asso ciate director. This year, as CAA vice president, Tracy was instrumental in organizing the Franklin Street Extrava ganza and the Homecom ing parade, and she is one of only two students on the board of directors for the Student Rec reation Center that is now under con struction. We need someone with Tracy's knowledge of a wide variety of CAA activities as well as her dedication and commitment to serving the inter ests of our student body. Additionally, in the three years I have known Tracy, I have seen her leader ship abilities and enthusiasm firsthand. As president of Kappa Kappa Gamma, I have had the opportunity to get to know Tracy and can attest to her com mitment to support all of our teams, revenue and non-revenue alike. Tracy is the possessor of a unique blend of dedication, enthusiasm and an exten sive knowledge of what it takes to lead needs. He fought for the establishment of a student voice on the UNC Board of Governors and got it! Bibbs fought for more financial assistance for our campus by convincing the North Caro lina General Assembly and the publ ic to approve and support the collegiate li cense plate proposal. These plates bring $15 (per plate) back to our campus year after year without raising stu dent fees. Recently more than 500 plates have been sold, and thousands more will be sold benefiting our great univer sity. These are the types of major ac complishment Bibbs can attain. Most recently, we've had problems obtaining a free-standing black cultural center. People are pessimistic about its future. But Bibbs has concrete plans that we believe will bring about solid results toward the goal of creating a center that will serve the University community well. Next year is going to be difficult. Our university is in trouble, and someone must work to reverse the momentum. The next student body president must be ready to assume office on day one. Mark Bibbs has the background to be gin making significant changes from the beginning. He is ready, willing and able to lead our student body through the difficult times ahead. Bibbs is best prepared for the major challenges that we will face over the next year. We urge you to cast a vote for expe rience and change on Tuesday, Feb. 1 1. Vote for real results. Vote for Bibbs. MICHELLE THOMAS Senior African-American Studies ARNIE EPPS Junior EducationEnglish Airan promises carefully researched platform ideas To the editor: Obviously, the world needs chang ing, but we should remind each other that we can only change what we are willing to see for ourselves and take into our own hands. It makes sense, then, that if the student body is ever to unite, we must do so under a president whose mind is on the Big Picture while her ears are open to ideas, and her OWN TWO FEET are pounding the pavement. Rashmi Airan combines ideas with proven ability. Nearly everything on campus falls into Rashmi's realm of experience. If an item of her platform interests you, then rest assured that she has not only researched it herself (yes, she did call Harvard to find out that their reading period lasts two weeks!), but has prob ably chaired a committee for its better ment. Rashmi'sactiveconcem proposes that students should pursue their own interests through grassroots campaign ing beyond Raleigh. We belie ve, though, that Rashmi will do her own homework before she'll expect us to jump on anyone's bandwagon. While Rashmi brushes up our tired tenets about student leadership with a straightforward platform, the house keepers are on their knees cleaning our hallways. Even while campaigning, Rashmi meets with the housekeepers and concerned students every Thurs day. This ensures that during her term in office she will have armed herself with enough information to build roads to ward better education, salary and job security. Rashm i 's proposal of a peer advising system will also provide sounder edu cation, salary and job security for us. It's difficult to mold our lives to a major when we don't know which perspec tives to take, let alone why! A wise, well-trained and caring student should assist JoeJane Freshman before Joe Jane wanders aimlessly into the office of someone who might or might not value Joe'sJane's presence at the Uni the CAA. And now, my hand is tired and you are getting bored, so I will only reiterate TRACY KIRINCICH for CAA president. KELLY BRUCE Senior English Promise of diversity comes with campaign of Tracy To the editor: Habari Gani! (What's the good news?) Tracy "K" is the good news. Proven leadership, commitment to di versity and paramount energy describe none other than Tracy K. Tracy has a record of proven leadership in the Caro lina Athletic Association. She has served in the capacity of vice president of the CAA and on the board of directors for the new Student Recreation Center, to mention a few. Tracy will be directly responsible for working on the comple tion of this project. There is no doubt in my mind that Tracy 's commitment and energy to serve the students is tremendous. This past year she worked directly with me on resolving the Homecoming queen situ ation and communicating ;he necessity of a new implementation policy for selection. She has also committed her self to diversifying the Cabinet of CAA versity. Rashmi is willing to do plenty of groundwork, but the burden of budget cuts shouldn't smother students who need to be using class time wisely. The University should pay a full-time de velopment officer to bang on doors for Xerox money so students can read new handouts in Rashmi's proposed 24-hour, safe, well-lit study center. Rashmi already works with adminis trators and students and is ready to familiarize the rest of us with the give-and-take required of each side. Vote Feb. 1 1 for Rashmi Airan, whose expe rience lets every student trust her poten tial. LUCY YATES Junior MusicEnglish JAMES DAVIDSON Sophomore Religious StudiesRussian Studies Airan combines integrity, experience in candidacy To the editor: It takes a distinct mixture of ingredi ents to create a recipe for an effective student leader a recipe that includes integrity, determination and open mindedness. Its so rare to find all these qualities in one individual, but Rashmi Airan's embodiment of these traits has become overwhelmingly apparent to us. Since her freshman year, Rashmi has worked to achieve focused goals of the executive branch of student govern ment. But unlike most people, she has steered clear of any dirty laundry or practices and instead has pursued ethi cal means to accomplishing each goal. As co-chairman of the Academic Af fairs Committee, Rashmi worked to save the passfail system when the faculty tried to eliminate it this past year. She doesn't have any fancy titles, but she has been getting relevant things done to make life better for us at UNC. As student body president, Rashmi will be accessible by working with all students and producing tangible solutions. Rashmi has proven time and time again that she can be an effective leader for the entire campus. From the music auditoriums of Hill Hall to the offices of the Carolina Union, from service pro grams of the Campus Y to the lounge of a residence hall, she has had a positive impact on the lives of students at Caro lina. Rashmi Airan is the ONLY candi date with the most campuswide experi ence. . . As student body president, Rashmi would have a sincere concern for in cluding ALL groups in the decision making process of this university. She is a rare individual who can bridge the gap that has so widely divided our cam pus. Rashmi will give YOU a voice, a voice that will not fall upon the deaf ears of personal agendas and individual aspirations but will send the call for action, not only in Suite C, but also . across the entire campus. It is time for us to take control over issues and affirm our rights as students at UNC. The ad ministration needs to be challenged to make certain commitments, and Rashmi is ready and willing to represent stu dents. Rashmi will get the jobdone, she will do it with integrity, she will do it with perseverance, and she will always ac complish a task with YOUR best inter ests at heart. Her experience is evident, her strength inspiring and her sincerity refreshing. Therefore, we MUST vote '. Rashmi Airan for student body presi dent.
