What is said is that this is the way it is supposed to be in the world. This is the way it is supposed to be. When Greek Olympians began their, athletic competitions in 776 B.C., they probably did not know what they were starting. But if they could see it all today, they would smile. In a world where people are drifting further and further apart, the Olympic rings bring humans closer. They pro vide a cure albeit briefly for some , of the pains that strain this planet. The l992WinterGames,whichcon-.; eluded Sunday, were no exception. Albertville, France, and surrounding , towns put on a 1 6-day show that was as.; entertaining and well-run as it was gor geous. French citizens have much to be proud of. The world is applauding. . - These Olympics also saw five Euro-. pean countries competing for the first time as independent states. The Olym pics gave Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia and Croatia another chance to realize their new-found independence , and to revel in it. Then there was the Unified Team, a patchwork of states from the former . Warren Hynes Asst. Sports Editor Soviet Union. These athletes gave their' restless land 23 medals to rally around. The most visible was the much-sought-" after gold in hockey. A hockey gold brought cheer to a downtrodden United States in 1 980. It could not have gone to a more qualified beneficiary in '92. There was Kristi Yamaguchi, the fig ure skater fantastique, gliding to a gold medal. An American of Japanese an cestry, Yamaguchi becomes a national hero at just the right time. Japan-bash-1 ing has begun again in the U.S., and it has threatened to damage the way Japa'-; nese-Americans are treated within their native country. As Yamaguchi stood on the podium singing the Star-Spangled Banner, she showed that she is needed in this country as much as anyone. ' - Of course, there was skier AIberto: Tomba, giving himself to the world. Toniba is a hero not just to his native Italy, but to all. He is brilliant in his occupation, yet just as brilliant in his personality. He is colorful, kind arid' creative. AH of us can cheer for Alberto. He may' or -may hot' know it, 'but Alberto Tomba symbolizes the meafi ing of the Olympic Games. He gives the world a chance to cheer in unison, to cry in unison, and to love in unison. This is the way it is supposed to be. Though the torch is now extinguished in Albertville, it must remain lit. It must burn within the souls of those who ex perienced the Games in any way. For we need more soul in this world. We need the Olympic spirit for more than a fortnight.
