"I decided to become a lawyer prob
ably because both of my parents were
lawyers," he said.
Pollitt went to Cornell University for
law school but left for Europe after his
second year. After serving in the Ma
rine Corps for three years in the Pacific
during World War II, Pollitt returned to
finish law school. He worked in the
Washington, D.C., Court of Appeals,
where he began struggling to further
civil rights with United Auto Workers.
"I worked in the fight for the rights of
the black fireman in D.C. who weas
being phased out of a job because of
increasing technology," he said.
Pollitt said he worked nights in teach
ing and decided that he enjoyed it. He
came to North Carolina because of seg
regation and racial tension, he said.
"When I came to North Carolina, I
found that segregation was present
within the schools, and I think I suc
cessfully changed that."
