Senior Class President Bob Paty would have to disagree.
Paty attended the Republican National Convention Aug. 17
20 in Houston as an alternate delegate from Tennessee.
"I feel that the best of Bush is yet to come," he said.
Paty, who ran for a delegate position in Tennessee's 1st
Congressional District last spring, was asked to fill an alter
nate spot at the last minute. "I immediately packed my bags
and went to Knoxville," he said.
Autumn Rierson, a sophomore political science and eco
nomics major, decided to attend the convention after working
in Washington, D.C., for the summer. "It was an incredible
opportunity," she said. "I haven't touched the floor yet."
Sophomore Kevin Hunter worked on the convention floor
in Houston. "It seemed a lot different than TV," he said. "I
was amazed by how much needed to be done."
Hunter said his most exciting moment at the convention
was standing next to state GOP chairman Jack Hawke as he
delivered the state vote to nominate George Bush.
Paty, who bought a cowboy hat and cowboy boots while in
Texas, said he enjoyed the speeches the most. "I've seen the
reruns on TV, and I just don't think it was the same for people

Rierson described the' convention as a great pep rally.
"Bush needed the boost," she said.'"I still think it's going to
be a tough race. It's hard to call at this point."
Hunter, who drove virtually nonstop to and from Houston,
said he was interested in going to another Republican Na
tional Convention. "I think I'll fly, though."

CHARLOTTE The group trying
to land an NFL franchise for Charlotte
will meet with league officials this week
and present a revamped financing plan
for its proposed stadium.
Mark Richardson of Richardson
Sports said the NFL leaders will meet in
Charlotte Tuesday. The meeting will be
closed to the media.
"We've come up with an alternative
financing method that we'll be present
ing to the NFL soon and making public
soon," Richardson said Friday in a tele
phone interview.
"The only concern has been the abil
ity to finance a stadium and a team. We
think this plan will put all those con
cerns to rest."
The proposal has been at the center of
recent controversy among city council
members, who said they would not use
public funding to help finance construc
tion of a stadium.
Richardson Group has said it would
not seek public money to build the facil
ity, which would seat 70,000 people
and would be located in downtown
Charlotte.
Observers have noted that the
Richardson Group's stadium funding
plan might be a stumbling block as it
competes with four other cities try ing to
land a franchise. It also has been a topic
of conversation among the competing
cities as well as the focus of a league
study.
"The NFL earlier this spring began
comparing the different markets to one
another," Richardson said. "In their
analysis, it appears St. Louis and Balti
more had better plans than we did.
"They relayed that fact to us and we
set out to see if we could negate the
advantage that St. Louis and Baltimore
have over us in stadium funding. We
think that we have effectively done that."
Charlotte Mayor Richard Vinroot met
with Hugh McColl, president and chief
executive officer of NationsBank this
summer, and talks of funding troubles
subsided.
St. Louis has been perceived as the
leading city to get an expansion fran
chise. Charlotte was an early clear-cut
choice for the second pick, but expan
sion experts have said Baltimore has
closed the gap and is giving North
Carolina's biggest city a fight for the
No. 2 position.
The selection is expected in October,
but Richardson said the current suit
against the league challenging its free
agency system and the lack of a collec
tive bargaining agreement may delay
the selection.
"What we would like to see is to have
the decision done," Richardson said.
"It's not as important to us whether the
first year is '94 or '95.
"What's important for us is finding
out whether we' ve been chosen or not."
