4The Daily Tar HeelFriday, November 20, 1992 MVP Eckersley makes it a clean sweep Plastics J M. tics include soi from page.-:. tics include sorting the mixed types. "(Processing companies) lose so much money by sorting through other materials," McGee said. She suggested installing a packaging tax to encourage industry to reduce the types of plastic packagings, so they could be mixed together for reuse. Cur rently, the different types of plastics cannot be mixed together because they melt at different temperatures and have different flow characteristics when melted, McGee said. BF1 will charge $50 per ton to dis pose of any contaminants in the loads of plastic recyclables. Contaminants will include anything other than plastic soda bottles and milk jugs, McGee said. Recyclers must follow program guidelines carefully to avoid incurring this high fee, she said. McGee has planned several measures to educate residents about recycling changes. The program will change plastic-recycling containers from barrels to front loading bins to catch people's attention, she said. "Graphic" signs also will be posted on the containers depicting the recycling process for plastics, whic" includes removing lids, rinsing cor tainers and flattening the container! she said. Jr McGee said she hoped to station vo"-" unteers at recycling sites in Decembc to inform recyclers of recycling change Volunteers will be sent letters to notif ' them of the reduction in plastic rec; -, cling, she said. - : Consumers who want to leam mol .-' about plastic recycling may call tl National Plastic Recycling Hotline at 800-243-5790. : The Associated Press NEW YORK Oakland reliever Dennis Eckersley, winner of the Ameri can League Cy Young Award last week, was also named the league's Most Valu able Player Thursday. Eckersley, who led the majors with 5 1 saves in 54 chances, is only the ninth player to win both the Cy Award and MVP honors in the same season. He joins Don Newcombe (1956), Sandy Koufax (1963), Denny McLain (1968), Bob Gibson (1968), Vida Blue (1971), Rollie Fingers ( 1 98 1 ), Willie Hernandez (1984) and Roger Clemens (1986). The right-hander is only the fourth reliever to win the MVP. The first was Jim Konstanty in 1950, followed by Fingers and Hernandez. Eckersley, 7-1 with a 1.91 ERA, re ceived 15 of a possible 28 first-place votes and 306 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers Association of America. He was followed by Minne sota outfielder Kirby Puckett with 209 points, including three first-place votes, and Toronto outfielder Joe Carter with 201 points and four first-place votes. Mark McGwire, Dave Winfield and Roberto Alomar also received first-place votes. Eckersley helped the A's win their fourth AL West title in five years, but he struggled in the playoffs against Toronto, giving up Alomar' s tying, two run homer in the ninth of Game 4 at Oakland. Puckett hit .329 for the Twins with 19 home runs and 1 10 RBIs. ShM Sar IM CLASSIFIED AD VERTISI NG CHHio .
