The principal address was made by Frank P. Graham who became President of the threefold University when consolidation of the institutions in the University became effective. Dr. Graham, now an official of the United Na tions in New York, was close to Max Gardner and was president at Chapel Hill when, largely through Gardner's efforts, the in stitutions were combined with Dr. Graham as President of all three. Other speakers were Gordon Gray and President Friday. Mr Graham, Mr. Gray and Mr. Fri day were the under consolidation. Governor Terry Sanford pre sided, and Secretary of Com merce Luther H. Hodges spoke briefly. Among those assembled were trustees, legislators,-N. C. Coun cil of State, members of the N. C. Washington Congressional dele gation, officials of the three in stitutions in the University, in cluding the winners of the O. Max Gardner Award, and members of faculties of the University. Speakers referred to Gardner's great contributions to the build ing of North Carolina and to the University, to his role in national affairs, and to his spirit of ser vice and leadership.
