CENTRAL LABOR UNION LAST WEEK WENT INTO HIGH GEAR-PRES. SCOGGINS APPOINTS CONVENTS COM. The meeting was opened with the invocation by Brother W. S. Campbell, with President Scoggins presiding, and the minutes of the previous meet ing were read and approved. The Usual order of business followed with reports by regular and special com mittees, and roll cal lof officers, locals and delegates. Outstanding was the .report that construction begins Mon day on the skating area, and that or ganisation work is going on in the fhemical industry, Western Union and Penders bakers. The delegates to the State Federation of Labor made a fine worthwhile report of their ac tivities in Durham, and, of course, brought out the fact that they had brought home the bacon, in bringing the State Federation of Labor Conven tion to Charlotte for 1941, the Second Monday in August. The opening of the negro housing project was reported, a medal for the C. C. L. U. that wil lexist for many years to come. It was reported that the Sheet Metal workers might affili ate with the Central body in the near future. The Building Trades are get ting along in excellent shape with con siderable work being finished, but other work and contracts appearing to keep up the building boom. The Chauffeurs local is still growing, and getting in better financial shape all the time. The delegates were asked to take back the news to their locals that the Ruppert beer was still on the “We do not patronize list,” and not to drink Ruppert’s until further no tice. The musicians reported art or chestra out at the Parks and Recrea tion Swimming Pool as requested. The printing pressmen have signed con tracts its was reported. The P. O. Railway Mail laborers local reported doubling their membership. The Journeymen barbers reported plans completed for a rousing Labor Day meeting of their craft, in competition with the meeting of the master bar bers at the same time. Various cor respondence was handled as usual. A committee of one, Brother Jack Moore was authorized to study the pamphlet, Why Britain Fights, and report back. Brother T. L. Funderburke was ap pointed to the organization committee instead of Brother McCrorie who is no longer a delegate. The secretary was asked to send a P C to those locals sot represented at this meeting. A Motion passed to appoint the steering committe for the 1941 State A. F. of , L. Convention. Wm. S. Greene was made chairman, with the other mem bers, T. L. Condor, H. P. Walker and L>. L. Funderburke. The secretary was instructed to write Durham A. F. of L. thanking them for their nice re ception at the Convention and offer \o reciprocate. The meeting closed with a few erudite remarks by Hon orary Delegate, Wm. Witter, who has returned to harness from a sick bed. WM. S. GREENE, Sec’y. Forty-Eight States Enact Labor Day Laws 1887 - 1923 FORTY-EIGHT STATES Between 1887 and 1928 every one of the forty-eight States, as well as the territories, insular possessions and the District of Columbia, enacted laws making Labor Day a legal State hol iday. The first state law was enacted by Oregon in 1887; the legislature desig nated the first Saturday in June as Labor Day, but later changed the date to the first Monday in Septem ber. Other states enacting similar legislation in 1887 were Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. Wyoming completed the roll by enacting a Labor Day law ih 1923.
