Chicago Corrupwimt of AFL Nm Smith Chicago.—The immense respon sibility and power of American women in political edcation was eloquently described by Mrs. E. Ryder at the interstate conference of the Illinoise and Wisconsin Women’s Trade Union Leagues and Committees. Mrs. Ryder, a widow, grand mother of 14, is preaident-emeritu of the St. Louis, Mo., Women’i Trade Union League. She is an In ternational Typographical Union member, employed as proofreader by the St Louis Post-Dispatch. She also is a social worker, and oper ates 3 homes in St. Louis—one for working girls, another for middle aged women and a third for elder ly women. site tola uie iso delegates to UK conference that organiitd labor hat. only began to organize the politics' strength of women unionists. “Some 30 years ago,” she said, "a new and significant privilege was granted to the women of America. Although it always had been contended that the hand that rocked the cradle ruled the world, it was not until the constitutional amendment of 1919 that women were given the right to vote and were clothed with all the legal rights of citizenship. "Today, women occupy positions of trust' as government ambassa dors, control large business hold ings, have occupied a seat in the Cabinet and possess the major por tion of the wealth of the country. "It is true that none of these high honors or holdings of wealth have reached the women of labor, yet labor’s women control the pur chasing power of labor, which rar.s into billions of dollars annually. "They, too, own and control a weapon of political strength in ti.e ballot. They can use it to protect democracy as we know it and value it. They can combine that voting strength for organized labor's benefit. "In the voting booth, you, as an individual, wield as much power as anyone.” She compared the power of wom en in polities to the potential of Niagara Falls before it was har nessed to generate electricity. "Labor is now building a power house," she said. "You will be an important part of it We are a lit tle late with our building, but we will have to get busy. Next year the enemies of labor will spend a lot o money, but we will have the ballots if we use them.” She called upon all AFL women to rally behind the leadership of Jo ph D. Keenan in his work as head of Labor’s League for Political Ed ucation. “Never has the labor movement been blessed with such political sa gacity aa has been provided by Joe Keenan,” she said. C AFL Dissatisfied With Food Plans Washington. —President H. L. Mitchell of the National Farm Labor Union of the AFL expressed dissatisfaction with the substitu tion world food plan adopted by the Food and Agricultural Organ isation of the United Nations. His position was supported by AFL President William Green in a cable from London and by other AFL leaders, fanner and co-oper ative spokesmen. AFL leaders fear that the fail ure to adopt the proposal establish ing international machinery for the distribution of agricultural sur pluses in accord with need will lead to dire economic results in this country and weaken our position in the fight against communism abroad. "If the agricultural surplus prob lem is not solved promptly, we are headed in this country for a rapid deflation in agriculture accom panied by irrational and immoral destruction of so-called surpluses and by restriction of production,” Mr. Mitchell warned. Mr. Mitchell added that after the state department “murdered” the original proposal it backed a sub stitute plan providing for a con sultative international committee with no authority and no funds. He said his union ia dissatisfied with this watered-down substitute and will work for some better ar rangement as soon as possible. Norris E. Dodd, director-gener al of the FAO, echoed AFL disap pointment in closing remarks to the conference. “In my emrly remarks to this conference, I referred to the hun gry millions of the world,” Mr. Dodd said. “No delegate here can feel that we have held out much hope to them. Oh, yes, we express ed our sympathy but not much else. Perhaps the committee sys tem adopted by the conference will help some. I hope so. The FAO staff will do its best to make it work.” late Agnes Nestor and her succes sor, the current president, Mias Margaret Mahr.
