THJC SOUTHERN HOSWTMITY • OUIMU K» COURTESY — 4 For Safety's Soke A traffic Iona ain't Iowan’ lana Thtft $ alway* trovkift bfcwing So kwwp year driving tala and *ana And park to da yawr wooing. In other columns of the magazine we try to inform our reader* of the tightening up of laws applicable to vehicular traffic and ownership responsibility. But in this column we just want to remind one and all —when driving keep close watch on the person behind the one ahead of you—THAT MEANS YOU. Strange as it may seem, automobiles are usually driven at one of two speeds—lawful, and awful. You know, a man at Syracuse, N. Y., drove cars for 15 years without a driver’s license. When the police finally caught up with him they asked him—-WHY? His reply: "I couldn’t pass the driver's test." From the way a great many drivers in the Piedmont handle cars on the highway, it would seem that they never took a driver’s test either. And then there is always that person, sometimes male and some times female, who is next to the center of the street, but decides to make a right-hand turn against the outside lane of passing ve hicles. What happens if she or he gets hit? You know as well as I do. And a great many drivers find the pedestrian crosswalk the only place to park when the light catches them trying to beat it out. Too, few seem to know that the pedestrian has the right of way, with the light, against any driver washing to turn across pedestrian traffic. No Improvement Yet When Noah sailed the waters blue, He had his troubles same as you. For Forty days he drove the ark. Looking for a place to park. . . Serious Road Hazard This couple proceeded slowly down a country lane in their car: he with his arm about his sweetie pie. Coyly, she asked, “Don’t you think it’s danp’erous . , . driving with one hand?” After thinking a minute, he K“?d the arm beck and placed hands on the wheel. “Aw, Honey,” she pouted, “I was only foolin’.” “Yeah,” he replied, “but I just happened to think of all the poor guys, who, driving with one arm, run into a church.” dust remember that the man who„ can drive with one hand, and kiss his sweetheart at the same time, is just not giving the kiss the attention it deserves. It’s much easier to make the right turn, even though it be a left one, than to make a wrong one, and at the wrong time. a Quarter's Sales Over $25,000,000 Textron Hos Giant Backlog Of Orders The Southern and Northern chains of Textron textile mills en tered the 1961 second quarter with order backlogs in excess of $26, 000,000 with only about $5,000,000 of the quarter’s estimated output yet unsold. A special report by Royal Little cf ’Providence, R. L, Textron’s president, received in Charlotte, de clared first quarter sales were $25,900,000. Net profits were esti mated at $4,000,000 before income taxes and adjustments. r.ie corporation’s headquarter* for the Southern chain is located, at Anderson, S. C., and is in charge of G. G. Cromer, formerly of Charlotte, executive vice-presi dent of Textron Southern. The I/ouise Mill, here is a unit of this chain. * Mr. Little forecast somewhat disturbed conditions in the textile markets and some curtailment by marginal producers during the second quarter. “The textile industry- has again shown its ability to stop an infla tionary price trend through in creased production," said Mr. Lit tle. “During February and March, operations were at the highest levels since the all-time record during 1942. OVERBUYING “Ultimate consumers, retail out lets, garment manufacturers and converters all have over-bought textile products,” continued Tex tron’s president. “Second-hand selling of fabrics below ceiling prices has temporar ily disrupted most primary mar kets," continued Mr. Little. “There will be some curtailment of textile output by marginal producers .during the next few months. “Surplus inventories should be well liquidated by July," he said. Mr. Little’s report included nu merous comments revealing his fear resulting from possible require ments in the new price control regulations affecting textiles which are being prepared by the Office of Price Stabilization.
