New Year Greetings to one and all Come to the Farmers Institute Tuesday. The Graded School will re-open Monday, the 9th. Let evervbodv work and talk for Scotland Neck during the year 1911 The next term of Halifax court will convene Jan. 30th for a two weeks term. Our merchants tell have enjoyed a good ing the past year. All the students that come home for the holidays have returned to their respective colleges. Come to the Farmers Institute next Tuesday. Th? session of the Institute will be held in Madry's Opera house. A Farmess Institute will be held at Halifax Monday and in Scotland Neck Tuesday. Come and bring friend with you. We would like to see every farmer in this community at the Farmers Institute next Tuesday. Come and bring your friend. Remember the election to be held Tuesday to fill the vacancy in the legislature. The Thompson Orphanage Guild gave a public entertainment at the Graded School auditorium Monday night. The exercises were very en joyable. No admission fee rharrred but a collection was taken for the orphanage. We invite the attention of our readers to the law card of Dunn & Dunn aDDearing in this issue of The Commonwealth. This firm is com posed of Mr. Albion Dunn, of Green ville, and Mr. Ashby W. Dunn, of Scotland Neck. Both of these young well known to our readers The diamond ring offered by the E. T. Whitehead Company was won by Miss Kate Futrell. The drawing took place Saturday in the presence of ouite a large crowd, and interest, ran high for awhile. Miss Futreil is receiving the congratulations of her friends for being the lucky win ner. The Bank of Hobgood opened its doors for business December 20th. We made a call at the bank Monday morning and found cashier E. P. Hyman at his post receiving and paying out money and appeared to be at home. The other officers of the bank are L. J. Baker, president, and R. J. Shields, vice president. The bank starts out with bright prospects and no doubt will be worth much to the Hobgood section. Mr. J. E. Kern was here Tuesday. Mr. W. H. Newell spent Tuesday in Weldon. Mr. L. Waxman spent Christmas in Baltimore. Miss Helen Lamb is visiting Mrs. Olivia McDowell. Miss Olie Shearin, of Essex, is visiting Mrs. J. C. Hardy Miss Annie Fennel of Raleigh, visited here the past week. Mrs. T. H. Vanlandingham re turned from Raleigh Monday. Mr. W. H. White made a business trip to Nerfolk, Va., this week. Mrs. S. J. Holland and family. Mr. N. Biggs left Monday for Richmond. Va., where he will buy a car load of horses and mules for Biggs & Johnson. Mrs. E. B. Higgs and children re turned to their home in Greenville Saturday, after spending the holi days with relatives here. Mr. A. Y., Friday, after spending sometime with his parents Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Cherry. Mrs. J. E. Bullock and son, Julian, of Conetoe, and Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Worsley, of Rocky Mount, visited their brothers, Messrs. D. A., R. J., and J. W. Madry, during the holidays. Congressman Claude Kitchin left Monday for Washington, D. C, to resume his duties as a member of Congress. Mr. Kitchin was accom rtained bv Mrs. Kitchin who will spend sometime in the capitol city. Mr. and Mrs. J. II. Hoffman & Bro., for a number of years launch out into business for themselves, under the firm name of Allsbrook & Boyette, and will occupy the Strickland Store. See announce ment in another column. Messrs. D. L. Christian, of Rocky Mount, and W. R. Walton, of Ste Dhensonville. Va., take the places of Messrs. Allsbrook and Boyette with Hoffman & Bro. Mr. Joseph House, one ot our Scotland Neck boys who has been at work for the Five Points Drug Co., at Durham the past six months, will be with the E. T. Smith & .Wim berly has dissolved and they practice medicine seperately year. Dr. Thurman D. Kitchin has re turned to Scotland Neck and will practice medicine with Dr. H. I. Clark. Several hundred Gypsies are en camped six miles east of Wadest oro and during last night a riot was pre cipitated in the camp when one who calls himself Chief Mitchell forcibly entered the tent of another man and assaulted a woman. In the fight that followed a number of men and women were badly injured. Mitchell was given a preliminary hearing)n the charge of crimina nssaii It and held in Superior court without bail. Three others were hnnnd over charged with assault with intent. From the hearing seems that there are two bands and each claims the leadership and the trouble culminated last night when the chiet made the assault on the woman.
