Shields. Miss Maude Giersch, of Winston Salem, is visiting Mrs. of Harper Alexander. Miss Lila Hancock ha3 returned home from Boykin, Va., where she visited for some days. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Dailey is attendine the Missionary Institute for the War- renton District at Enfield this week. Mr. Dailey was on the program to deliver an address on Missionary Education. Mr. Howard Twisdale, who has been with the Kimball Hardware Co. for the past year, left Tuesday to take a position in Scotland Neck. Mr. Twisdale is clerking for the Josey Hardware Co. C, Feb. 7th Miss Eloise Williamson returned to her home at Portsmouth, Va. Saturday, after spending three weeks with the Misses Perkins. Miss Maude Baker left for Nor folk on Tuesday last. Mr. A. Sherrod, formerly of this town returned to his home at High Point, N. C. Monday after a short visit to his sister, Mr3. C. H. Baker. Miss Fannie Mathews and E. A. Council attended the dance at Rob ersjnville Friday evening. Mr. K. W. Gorham, of Virginia Beach, Va., was in town a few days this week. Miss Maggie Bell Jones returned to Norfolk on Tuesday last to re sume her business course. Mis3 Eulala Perkins, Eloise Wil liamson and P. H. Davenport went to Parmele Tuesday last. Mr. Joseph Waldo is still ill. Miss Celia Holladay, age 75 died of pneumonia Feb. 4th, was buried at the old homestead about fifteen miles from here, Sunday 5th. Mr. W. S. Rhodes went to Oak City last Tuesday. Mr. E. A. Council went to see his brother Sunday, near Oak City, who is quite ill. , ' . Miss Eulala Perkins and P. H. Davenport accompanied Miss Wil liamson as far as Hobgood Saturday. Mr. E. EJmondson's barn was burned Thursday night, right much of the corn was saved. Miss Lillie Floyd returned home Sunday after a two weeks stay in Rocky Mount. Miss Helen Reddinfield, of Rocky Mount, is the guest of Miss Lillie Floyd. We are glad to know Mrs. W.D Shaw, who has been very ill with pneumonia, is improving. On Friday night, February 10th there will be presented by the "Hamilton Dramatic Club" the play entitled, "Above the Clouds" at the Academy, beginning prompt ly at eieht o'clock. This attractive little play will be given for the bene fit of the Hamilton Graded School, and a cordial invitation is extended to all. Admission, 15, 25, and 35cts On last Monday night at ten o'clock the Angel of Death visited the home of Mr. B. L. Upton, and took from it his loving wife, who has been his constant and faithful companion for I twenty eight years. Mrs. Upton was fifty years of age, and has been very active until a few weeks ago, when she was taken ill. Her re mains were intered in the city ceme tery Wednesday afternoon at two thirty o'clock. She was a consistent member of the Episcopal church, and is survived by two sisters, two children, and a loving husband. Halifax, N. C, Feb. 7 At this writing, Tuesday morning, the Jen kins will case has right of way in court. There are many witnesses yet to testify, which will probably consume the day. So, in all proba bility the jury will not have the case until late Wednesday. The case has excited right much comment, and war is being waged with much zeal by the attorneys on both sides. While the jurors are exercising as much patience as could be expected under the circumstances. Rev. A. G. Willcox, who for a number of years has been coming here regularly once each month, and has perhaps missed fewer appoint ments in the meantime than any pastor in Halifax county in consider ation of his age, filled the pulpit of the Baptist church Sunday to the delight of many friends. Mr. Will cox has many friends here, as well as elsewhere, and it is a pleasure always to come in contact with this man of GodK who has a good word for everybody, a cordial handshake, and a "Gob bless you, my brother!" His messages at both the morning and evening hour were calculated to inspire courage in the Christ fol lowers. Mr. W. B. Drewry has added re cently a ten-feet annex to his brick store occupied by S. A. Richards, and now has a very desirable build ing. Gregory & Stedman have decided to put in a modern cotton gin in the near future and otherwise fix up the old Emry gin property. Lumber is already being placed for the new house. In all probability Halifax will have the free ferry in operation in a short time, as there has been a movement on foot for some weeks to that end, which just recently has assumed definite shape. Many favorable comments have been made here and there during this term of court with reference to our new court house, of which the county should be proud. Miss Bessie Eure came down from Weldon Saturday to visit her father for several days. Miss Eure has just recently suffered a severe illness from which she is gradually recov ing. ' Miss Alice Fleming has been spend ing several days with relatives at Tarboro. Miss Mary Lou King returned to her home in Rocky Mount Sunday, after spending some days with Mrs. Coppedge. Mrs. Cook (nee Mrs. J. K. Batch- elor), of Tillery, stopped over a few hours here last Friday, returning, rom a visit to her brother, Mr. iYank Cullom, at Dunn, N. C. O. J. Moore, of Scotland Neck, spent an hour or two here Saturday, going down to Whitakets on 99 to see his parents. Glenview Items. Glenview, N. C, Feb. 6th Our farmers are getting right down to work now. The first Saturday in each month is the day that the farmers settle with their hired labor and it seemed like every body had business in town last Saturday. Mr Al Dozieris teaching a sing ing class at Central Cross. He is a noted singing master and gives satis faction wherever he goes. Rev. G. W. May will preach at Hickory Chapel next Sunday. The new Minister on the Battle boro and Whitakers circut has changed the appointment at Central Cross, from the 2nd to ths 3rd Sim day in each month and will preach there on Sunday Feb. 19th. Rosa, the small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Whitley had her shoulder knocked out of place a few days ago from a severe fall while at school. A colored man named Whitaker, whose parents reside here had the misfortune to get his leg broken last week while in the employment of the Fosburg Lumber Company. Mr. D. H. Melton, and family, has moved to Enfield. . We are sorry to have them, leave, but wish them success in their new home. Did you ever try borrowing money from yourself by reducing your wants?
