On account of the bad weather a few weeks ago our far mer friends got a little behind with their work, but we are glad to know that always after rain there is sun shine, and the farmers around here have surely made good use of the time. A few farmers have already got cotton up and growing. That sounds good for this section of country. Messrs. Reid, Greene and Wad ford attended a fish fry near Battle boro last Saturday night, they re ported a very nice time. Mrs. P. Mangum, of Oxford, spent last week with her daughters, Mrs. J. D. Edwards and Mrs. I. O. Wad ford. School will close at the Powell school house tomorrow week, May the 6th. The teacher, Miss Mary Brinkley, of Greenville, extends a cordial welcome to all who wish to come, but she asks those that come to bring a basket as dinner will be served on the ground. Miss BrirAley is a very good teach er and has given excellent satisfact ion among the patrons of her school and we all hate to see her leave. There will be preaching at Salem School house the first, second and third Sunday of this month. The first Sunday by Rev. Law, of Rocky Mount, the second by Rev. May, of Castalia, the third, by Rev. Franks, of Battleboro. We expect a large crowd each Sunday as Salem seems to be a very popular place. It seems that it is impossible for Mis. C. M. Bennett to raise any chickens this year. As soon as the little fellows come off the nest they are taken with gapes and soon die. Mrs. Bennett has tried almost every thing to stop it, but it seems noth ing she does has any effect. Over 2,000,000 fariners. In every section of the United States and Canada are being canvss sed by over 2,000 traveling salesmen for the Watkin's Remedies, Flavor ing Extracts, Spices, Toilet Articles, etc. Just now there is a rare chance for a bright energetic young sales man to handle the business in Hali fax county. We notice from the Greensboro papers that Mr. J. R. Cutchin, a native of Halifax county, has been elected to the office of public safety of that progressive and live city. The office of public safety is one cre ated under the commission form of government. It is a responsible office and carries with it a very nice salary. Tarrlbie Picla?3 cf Suffering. Clinton, Ky.
