Ray is now located at Wilhamston. We will have some more horse racing early in March. The next term of Halifax Super ior court convenes on the 29th. The bad weather the past several weeks has just about shut off busi ness. Cold did you say? Well yes, it was rather cool Saturday and Sun day morning. The completion of the Baptist par sonage has been delayed on account of the bad weather. There were a few falls on the ice but have heard of no serious damage to any of our people. Our R F. D. carriers had a pret ty rough time making their trips several days last week. Don't forget the date for the farmers institute in Scotland Neck which is Saturday, 27th. Mr. Chas. T. Lawrence killed 17 fine porkers last Friday. We were unable to get their weights. The bear, supposed to be the one that was reported to be in theneigh b rhood of Mr. Willie Price, is now said to be in town. Look out. We hear of a scarcity of wood on every hand. In a great many in stances it is almost impossible to get enough wood to cook with. We are requested by the U. D. C. to say that on account of the bad weather there will be no celebration of Lee-Jackson Day on Friday, 19th. The weather during December and thus far in January has been very bad on people who had not finished picking cotton . and thresh ing peanuts. The regular monthly meeting of the Merchants Association will be held in the office of the Scotland Neck Bank Friday night, 19th. A full attendance is desired. The merchant that advertises ap preciates your trade enough to ask for it. Watch our columns for this class of merchants and see how many we have in Scotland Neck. We have received beautiful calen dars from our home firms as follows: N B. Josey Guano Co., Hardy Hard ware Co., the Hardware hustlers and R. J. Madry, wholesale grocer. Thes-e firms have our thanks. Mr. N. B. Josey tells us that he has recently had bored on his lot for familv use a well one hundred and fifty feet deep. He says that this water almost equals Buffo'a Litha. Several other citizens have deep wells bored with good results The pat few weeks has been real good duck hunting weather but our veteran duck-hunter, Mr. J. E. Lewis, has beenc mfined to his room on account of an attack of rheuma tism and missed the fun. Mr. Lewis is out now but then he is in no con dition to go duck hunting. PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS. The Coming, Going and Whereabouts of Our People and Other Polks. Mr. Jcsh Robertson spent Mon day in Washington, N. C. Judge S. M. Gary, of Halifax, was here on business Monday. Miss Kitty Foster come Saturday to be with her uncle, Mr. E. E. Hil iiard, who is very ill. Mrs. Lillian Debrule, of Speed, returned home Sunday after visit ing Miss Nellie Rogister. Miss Naomie Robertson, of Sarah Leigh Hospital, Norfolk, Va., is here on a visit to relatives. Dr. Ira M. Hardy, of Washington, N. C, spent two days last week with his brother, Mr. R. L. Hardy. Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Weeks, of Norfolk, spent a few days last week with Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Manning. Miss Helen Hiliiard was called home Friday on account of the ex treme illiness of her father, Mr. E. E. Hiliiard. Mr. W. P. Keeter, who has been clerking for Hardy Hardware Co., left last week for Raleigh where he will take a business course in King's Business College. Mr. Billiard 111. Mr. E. E. Hiliiard, so well and favorably kjiown to all our readers, lies desperately ill at his home here. He suffered a complete break-down Thursday of last week and since that time has been in a very feeble condition. The report from his bed side this (Wednesday) morning is that he is holding his own. We are all hoping that his life may be spared for some time to his family and friends. Mr. londruy Doing Well. The latest news from Mr. J. E. Condrey, of Enfield, who was acci dentally shot Wednesday morning of last week, is that he is doing as well as could be expected under the circumstances. He has lost one eye entirely, and at one time there was great danger of losing the other one. Mr. Condrey has returned from the hospital and is now at home under the care of his family physician, Dr. A. S. Harrison. The Mission Services Closed. The Mission services, conducted at Trinity Church by Rev. John A. Matthews, Missioner, for ten days, closed Sunday night. Mr. Matthews did some very fine preaching and was of the kind that will bear fruit in the days to come. The regret is that the weather was so bad that more of our people could not gt out to the services. At the home of the rector, Rev. R. W. Anderson, Monday evening from 7:30 to 10:30 an informal re ception was held at which time many of our people called to greet Mr. Matthews in a social way. Married at Halifax. Mr. H. T. Hancock took his friends some what by surprise Thursday evening of last week when he and Miss Elizabeth Parks, of Spring Hill, met at the home of his sister, Mrs. D. M. Campbell, at Hali fax, and were joined in the holy bonds of wedlock. Rev. O. L. Powers-speaking the words that united their lives. Mr. and Mrs. Hancock returned to Scotland Neck Friday afternoon and are now receiving the congrat ulations of their many friends. The Commonwealth extends best wishes for a long and happy life. If We Ail Would Do it. Recently the writer was going down street behind several jolly girls and when they came to a nail drivn through a board with the point up, one stopped and took great pains to turn it down, saying that it might ruin somebody's foot. How thoughtful we all say. But the writer thought too, how different this world would be if everybody going along the lane of life would take the pains to turn down all the sharp thorns of criticism and malice and anger. How easy it would be for a community to change itself from heart to conduct if every one in it would ouly take time and use the forethought in all that pertains to another's happiness. How many useless, foolish, unkind, things are said, things which can bring profit to no one, and must stir up strife and embitter hatred, things which would not be said, if a little fore thought had been exercised. No one is so mean that we ought to de sire his ill will, no one so helpless that he might not be able to do you a good turn some day, no one so in significant that you can afford to make him suffer by needless thrusts and unkind neglects. Burlington News. THE COLD WAVE. The Temperature as Recorded by Tire Local Weather Man. We are indebted to Mr. J. Y. Sav age, out local weather man, for the following report of the weather for the dates from January 6th to 16th inclusive. As will be seen from this report the 8th, 13th and 14th were the coldest, as the thermometer I registered 8, 7 and 5 respectively, and the 16th was a close second with the mercury at 9 degrees. The re port reads as follows: January 6. Lowest 8. Highest 25 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. 15. 17. 24. 19. 23. 21. 7. 5. 12. 9. 45 35 35 48 38 37 22 26 Precipitation for the month to date 2 11-100 inches, including rain, snow, sleet and rain. Snow 2 1-2 inches deep. Farmers' Institutes. Farmers' Institutes will beheld at Halifax, Friday, January 19th., and at Scotland Neck, Saturday, Jan. 27th. Morning sessions will open at 10:00 a. m. and afternoon sessions at 1:30 p. m. , At the the same place and date will be held an Institute for women by Mrs. Charles McKimmon and Miss Webb. Interesting programs have been prepared for these meetings. A premium of ?1 will be given for the best loaf of bread baked and ex hibited by a girl or woman living on the farm. A premium of $1 will be g:ven for the best five ears of pure bred corn. No premium for corn will be awarded to any exhibit unless it possesses merit and has points of excellence. For bread, bought or home-made yeast may be used, but bread made by the "salt rising" process will not be considered in making awards; nor will bread scoring less than 75 points out of a possible 100 points for per fect bread, be given a premium. All farmers and their wives, sor.s and daughters, and all others inter ested in farming and the betterment of the farm homes, are urged to attend these meetings. Bring u book and pencil to take notes. The boys are especially invited to attend the institutes. A Good Showing. Those who think that drinking and drunkenness are on the increase arc trreatly in error. The Salisb'jr Po-it gives facts to show that prohi bition is lessening the drink evil. The Greensburd Record says that it is a rare thing to see a drunken man in Greensboro. Just so in States ville, Charlotte and at other places in the State. .
