The next Union will be held with On Sunday night about 12 o'clock : Tom Hawkins shot Henry Cotten in j the left side with a pistol in the yard j of one Pearly Morgan. Cotten died j Monday. Hawkins was arrested j Monday morning, and Tuesday af-j ternoon, before Justices J. E. Shields, A. C. Liverrnon and C. L. McDowell, an investigation of the case was commenced, but very little progress was made when the court took a re cess until Wednesday morning, and at the hour of going to press (12 o'clock Wednesday) the hearing had not been completed. Mr. A. Paul Kitehin is appearing for Hawkins and Messrs. Ashby Dunn and Stuart Smith are repre senting the State. The defendant admits the shout ing, but claims self-defense, while the State is contending for murder in the first degree. From what we have heard of the evidence and the reports on the out side, it is truly a case of a bad wo man and whiskey. One man is in his grave and the other one in the hands of the law. A "Silver Tea." At the home of Mrs. Mary E. Gray on Tuesday evening, March 26th, the ladies of the Baptist church gave a "silver tea." Misses Lena Cherry and Gertrude Whitehead re ceived at the door and Misses Irene Whitehead and Katherino Hancock presided at the punch bowl. Sever al selections were rendered by Misses Emily Biggs, Kate Futrell and Mr. 0. J. Moore, Miss Elizabeth Futrell presiding at the piano. A salad course was served in the dining room, and as the guests left the dining hall little Miss Elsie Woolard and Joe Wimberley pre sented each with a bouquet of violets. Tbe Merchants Association.
