Very fateresUng Session of Iks Ceunly Association Friday. The Halifax County Teachers As sociation met in the graded school auditorium Friday morning. The exercises were opened by a song and Rev. N. C. Yearby, pastor of the Methodist church, offered prayer. County Superintendent A. S. Harri son called the association to order and made a few appropriate re marks. He said that thi3 had been a very successful school year for the county, taking all things in consider ation; that the teachers had done a better grade of work. He spoke very complimentary of our hand some school building. The teachers have been engaged in studying "The Teacher and the School," by Colgrove, this year, and after the opening exercises this study was resumed as follows: Superintendent C. L.Whitaker, of Enfield, talked on "The Work of the School." He dwelt at length on hearing, recitations and keeping'or- der, showing also the difference be tween hearing lessons and teaching. Mi33 Eunice Crews, of the Heaths ville school, read a very interesting paper on "Primary Reading or Work" and gave illustrations of how she teaches the primary grades. What Miss Crews said was good from beginning to end. The people of Heathsville are fortunate in hav ing her as their teacher. The next subject taken up was "The Teacher's Preparation of the Lesson." Two interesting papers were read by Misses Webb and King, of the Weldon graded school. The morning session was closed after a few remarks by Prof. J. D. Everett. It was then announced that dinner had been prepared in the hall on the first floor for all the teachers and visitors. And such a dinner it was! There was a plenty and some to spare, and everybody was served in the very best style. Our ladies can not be surpassed when it comes to preparing and serving good meals. The afternoon session was devoted to fin address by Prof. Austin, of the East Carolina Teachers' Train ing School, of Greenville. Prof. Austin spoke on the subject of "Ge ography." He showed very clearly how to do effective teaching in the schoolroom. His address was yery able and instructive. The subjects assigned to J. B. Aiken and A. E. Akcrs, on account of the lateness of the hour, were called off. In making announcements Dr. Harrison said that there would be a teachers institute he'd at Weldon about the middle of June for two weeks. The law requires that all teachers of the county attend or show a certificate that they had at tended a summer schol for teach ers. Most of the teachers spent the! night here and were entertained by our town people. This gave our people an opportunity of seeing more of the teachers and gave them a chance of hearing Prof. Noble lec ture It was a pleasure to- have the teachers here and we hope to see them come this way again soon.
