Miss Ernestine Cherry left last week for Greensboro to resume her studies at the State Normal. Miss Susie Roberson, of Palmyra, visited her brother, Mr. A. S. Rober son, several days the past week. Mr. Gavin L. Hyman. of Green ville, spent Sunday here with his pa rents, Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Hyman. Miss Bessie Whits, of Norfolk, has accepted a position as bookkeep er for the Scotland Neck Furniture Co. After an illness lasting through several months, Mr. George Lewis Hancock died at the home of his son, Mr. H. T. Hancock, Thursday morn ing. September 19th. Mr. Hancock was a brave Confederate soldier, and at the time of his death was n faithful member of Buck Kitchin Camp Confederate Veterans. He loved to talk of the war and the many experiences he had whilp fal lowing Lee. Mr. Hancock was one amonp- mn- oldest citizens, being in his 74th year. He was born in Bertie coun ty, near Lewiston, but came to this section 35 or more years ago. Lesides three son Messrs. W M H. T. and Lewis Hancock, of Scot land Neck, and one daughter, Mrs. D. M. Campbell, of Halifax, the de ceased leaves a devoted wife to mourn the loss of a true husband and father. The burial took place in the Bap tist cemetery Friday morning, the service at the grave beinor conduct ed by Rev. J. E. Lanier, assistant pastor of the Baptist church. C, to resume his studies at the Citadel Military Col lege. Mr. R. P. Byrd returned Monday from Fayettevilie and Harnett coun ty, where he visited relatives for several days. Mr. M. P. Alston, of Portsmouth, Va., spent several days last week with Messrs. C. A. and R. I. Jones, returning heme Sunday. Messrs. Josh Robertson, Tcmmie Pendleton and sister. Miss Virginia Pendleton, spend Sunday in Fnfteld with relatives and friends. Mr. W. F. Kutterworth went to Richmond. Va., some day ago to enter a hospital fov pp-.cial treat ment for rheumatism. His friends hope he may be greatly benefited. Rev. Thos. L. Trott, of Durham, was here Sunday and conducted ser vices at the Episcopal church, preaching both morning and night. Mr. Trott is considering a call to this work. Messrs. O. J. Moore, W. F. Joy ncr, R. F. Weaver, L. L. Cherry, with Johnnie Braxton as chauffer, spent Sunday in Whitakers, making the trip in Mr. Moore's handsome new Overland car. Blind Tiger Arrested. Special officer Chas. G. Hamlet, of Rcanoke Rapids, came down Mon day morning and arrested Isaac Sim mons, colored, under a United States warrant charging him with selling whiskey without license. Simmons was taken to Weldon and given a hearing before Commissioner Gooch, who sent him on ut to the Federal court under a bond of one hundred dollars, which he gave and returned home on the afternoon train. On Saturday evening. Sentember J.a numoer of former Meredith students met at the home of Miss Helen Hiliiard to organize ; Mpre dith club. Miss Lulie Dickson, of Wake For est, general secretary of the organi zations, was present and in an infor mal talk told of the purpose of the clubs and the work they are doing. Much enthusiasm was manifested and a club of fourteen members was formed with the following' officers: Mrs. C. J. Shields, president: Mr?. T. B. Wheeler, vice-president; Miss Anna Kitchin, secretary; and Miss Olivia Lawrence, treasurer.
