The big horse races will be held i to-day. There is a large list of en tries for the races. There are several tew advertise ments in The Commonwealth this week. Raad them. The deer hunters are out almost every day but we have not heard any "news" since the first hunt. Cole's hot blast heaters make a big reduction in your coal bill. See their advertisement and guarantee. Work on the post office building has started in earnest again after a delay of several weeks waiting for some steel beams. The piano and organ contest con ducted by tho Burroughs Pittman Wheeler Co. closed Saturday night and the vote3 were counted Monday. They give in their advertising space on the first page this week the re sult of the count. The contest was a big success. Mr. Clarence Smith, of Dunn, was here Sunday. Dr. R. M. Johnson went to Rich mond Tuesday on a business trip. Mr. C. H. Bell, of Portsmouth, Va., was here Monday and Tuesday on business. Mr. R. H. Smith, of Richmond, Va., is visiting his brother, Mr. Stuart Smith. Mrs. James G. 'Elmore, of Nor folk, Va., is visiting her mother, Mrs. Kate Dunn. Mrs. R. M. Conn returned to her home at Areola Monday after a visit to Mrs. J. C. Hardy. Mr. J. H. Norman, of Halifax, was here Saturday. His friends are always glad to see him. Mr. Roy D. Hardy returned to Charleston. S. C, Friday to resume his studies at the Citadel. Miss Willie Lovegrove has return ed from Portsmouth where she has been visiting Mr. J. E. Lovegrove. Miss Annie Cherry left Friday for Dunn to resume her duties as teach er in the graded school at that place. Rev. R. A. McFarland is attending the meeting of the Blackwater As sociation at Newsoms, Va., this week. Misses Minnie Dunn and Mary White left Friday for Enfield to re sume their duties as teachers in the high school. Rev. Robt. King was in town Monday returing to his home 4n Greenville after having preached at Nahala Sunday. Miss Laurie J. White left Monday for Greenville to take a special course st East Carolina Teachers Training School. Miss Myrtie Hill Wilkinson left Monday for Norfolk to take a com bined business course in the Davis Wagner business college. Mr. R. C. Everett, of Durham, passed through town Thursday en route to his old home just below Palmyra in Martin county to spend a few days. Dr. C. A. Whitehead and Mrs. Whitehead and children passed through town Saturday enroute to Littleton to spend Sunday at Panacea Springs. They made the trip in an automobile. Mr. and Mrs. W. W. House, of Columbus, Ohio,, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. John T. House. Mr. House has has not been here before in four years and his family and friends are glad to see him. Mrs. Lena Boyette and Misses Donnie and Pattie Dickens were called to Enfield Monday on account of the illness of their mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Dickens, who was taken ill while visiting her brother in En field. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Austin left Monday for Gates where Mr. Austin becomes agent for the A. C. L. Railroad at that place. Mr. Austin has been working in the Coast Line office here for nearly two years and has made many friends. We regret the going away of these clever peo ple. Mr. G. Hoffman, accompanied by Mrs. Hoffman, went to a hospital in Philadelphia, Pa., last week to consult a specialist. Mr. Hoffman has been confined to his room for (several days with rheumatism and then he suffered an attack of some thing like appendicitis and it was thought best for him to consult a specialist. We hope he may soon bs restored to health and return to his friends and business. Death of an iofcot. The infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. B. Parrish, of Greenville, died Monday and its body was brought here for burial Tuesday morning, accompanied by Mr. Parrish, Mrs. E. B. Higg3, and Mr. J. Frank Brinkley, Jr. Gordon-Clark. Dr. and Mrs. Henry Irwin Clark have announced the engagement of their accomplished daughter, Miss Anna Barrow Clark to Rev. W. J. Gordon, of Spray, the marriage to be solemnized in Trinity Episcopal church on Wednesday, Nov. 5th. Mr. Editor. In your article last week headed "Mr. Bennett Here" you said, "he found one field dam aged at least ten per cent." It should read "fifty per cent." or half. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Wills and Miss Lila have all been to a hospital in Norfolk and have each been oper ated on, and we are glad to report are doing well and will be at home about October 1st. Glad to report the condition of Rev. A. G. Willcox as such that he Dent last week in Halifax attending his meeting but was too feeble to take part in the services. Cartwright, D. D., Pastor. The next annual session of the North Carolina National-Baptist State Convention will met in Eliza beth City, N. C, Wednesday, Octo ber, 1913, and continue in session until the following Sunday night. The minutes of. the former session are unavoidably late, but the secre tary will send them out immediately after he gets them from the press. This coming session, which is of great and vital interest, will be held in the spacious and commodious edifice of the Olive Branch Baptist church, whose pastor. Rev. Dr. C. M. Cartwright, is president of the Convention. ' People in various parts of the State are making preparations to attend this session of the Conven tion. Those who go by rail should join in groups of ten or more, when ever possible, and purchase a block ticket.
