I n'TKWWI THE COMMONWEALTH. Published Every Thursday BY J. C HABDY, Editor and Proprietor. Entered at the postoffice at Scotland Neck, N. C, as Second-Class Matter. Thursday, November 6, 1913. What is to be done about building a Confederate Monument in Scot land Neck? Now is a good time to start the movement. The North Carolina Just Freight Rate Association seems determined to keep up the fight for Just Freight Rates. This is the only way to ever get the rate we ought to have. With Enfield township on the west and Halifax township on the north, building good roads with bond issues it will be almost abso lutely necessary for Conoconara, Scotland Neck, Ro3eneath and Pal myra townships to soon do some real permanent road building. We want to suggest that these town ships come together and pass a bond election and build good roads. It can be done and without such a heavy tax. New Folks Since Tbey'Te Cot Oat Booze The Observer's line of march (in Raleigh during the State Fair) led through at least 30,000 people, and the men it encountered or saw un der the influence of sowpaw could have been counted on the fingers of one hand, and of men drunk enough to be "run in" it saw not one. The present day public gathering in North Carolina is so different from the old institution that comment on it is general and irresistible. It is a gathering of practically a new peo ple Charlotte Observer. Jorors For November Court. A Hallrw'e' n Far?y. Reported for The Common ealth. On the night when witches ride and all things unholy are abroad, Gudeman and Gudewife C. W. Al bertson, having the services of their friendly witches, made merry in their hospitable home near town. Thej gathered a goodly company there and divided them according to their several tastes. Those who were devotees of the game played whist, while the others joined the more hilarious and more typical ly hallow'een sports. Apples were bobbed for Tith some success; for tunes were drawn from suspended apples and lettered turnips. The portrait of the man in the moon was drawn amid : much merriment, and the wicked but fascinating black cat had his tail appended in various un anatomical places The ears of corn which accomo datingly produced a soft, fairy glow showed the potato brownies and the mild-faced collards looking on with bland approval. A nut contest se verely taxed the wits of the assem bled guests for the fifteon quiet minutes. Then delicious salad and its usual concomitants, served en buffet, delighted the merry-makers. After wishing host and hostess good night, each guest was present ed with a lighted jack-o-lantern as a mascot against all harm on the homeward journey. The owls looked solemnly down. the goblin lanterns grinned, the wheels of the departing vehicles crunched the gravel, and a happy, satisfactory evening was over. MRS.
