As is knowu to moat of our readers, he is one of the foremost men in our State, and would be an excellent selection for , the Supreme Court bench, a position that his fine ability and loog experience would enable him to nil with credit to himself and honor lo the State. fRobesouian. We heartily join with cur contem porary in his commendation of the distinguished gentleman named. Xo man in Xorth Carolina would fill tbe position with more honor and dignity. Take Mr. Datia altogether he is the peer of any, and no man in the State would grace the Supreme Court Bnch as well as he. If be is put upon the bench, be ought to be made Chief Justice, as the moat bnl- 1 ant ctm ought to occupy the ehief place in the coronet. That ought not to be made a question of locality, but of the qualifications of the man. There is another position to bo filled by tbe next--lgilature, in which Mr. Davis, by his personal purity, statesmanship and .thrilling elo quence, could most effectually serve the whole RepubTe and honor his State. We do not know what ihe Democratic party will do; we write without consultation with any one and while we express our views, we are confident that every one feels that they are just, and that the party will honor itself by putting Hon. George Davie ia either of he highest. bet and niosFbouorable positions within the gift of the Stata We have received the first number of "The Farmer and Mechanic," the organ of the Department of Agricul ture of Xorth Carolina, published in Raleigh, by R. It is ah eight page journal, containing fortyeight columns of intereatiug and valuable matter, original and selected. We welcome it to our exchange list and heartily commend it to the Indus trial classes of Xorth Carolina, for whom it is the professed and srortby organ. The first number certainly promises well and we congratulate the management upon "the success attained in its neat, attractive appear ance and valuable reading matter. Instead of discontinuing post offices and postal routes these facilities ought to be doubled. If our "erring Southern brother , the Postmaster General, would gire his attention to these wants of the peo p'e. be would much better serve bis country and gire more popularity for his fraudulent chief than by jnnfcrting around maligning his na tive South.
