We heartily join with cur contem

man in Xorth Carolina would fill
tbe position with more honor and
dignity. Take Mr. Datia altogether
he is the peer of any, and no man in
the State would grace the Supreme

put upon the bench, be ought to be
made Chief Justice, as the moat bnl-

to be made a question of locality, but
of the qualifications of the man.
There is another position to bo filled
by tbe next--lgilature, in which
Mr. Davis, by his personal purity,
statesmanship and .thrilling elo

the whole RepubTe and honor his
State. We do not know what ihe

are confident that every one feels that
they are just, and that the party will
honor itself by putting Hon. George

During the colored conference- here,
we saw rare collections of umbrellas
and carpet bags. They were of all
color and all 8tylef3 from the brus

of the rainbow, were displayed. ; Car
pet bags w'th patent insides and
some with none at all long bags,
short bags, If an bags, andifat bag-,

out. We saw one fall open, it had a

and the "Discipline.' Every man

Colored Conference.
The colored people had a confer
ence here during the past" week. It
was largely attended. There were
some 175 ministers, and delegates,
the majority of them ministers. On
iron lay there were,: at least, 2,500,
on the grounds. We are sorry to
si that we can't discover any deci
ded intellectual improvement in
them. We heard onp preach du
ring the week, at the evening ser-.
vices at.d report some of his words,
to show, what a rich fWd, there is for
missionaries in our midst among this
class. He said, among other things,
"when de cup of God's eternal wraff
runs over, and runs down on de sides
of de earth, and melts de firm'ent
with ferment hear, Til be dog-gone
ef then don't be bisness times down
here den, and you will den be sorry
dat you did not listen to me:" Now,
while there is so much lamentable
ignorance among the colored people,
