BREAKS RECORD FOR
. a Ti-t t -
UlrrllNU LA I 1 Lx
Washington, D. C, Sept
22 The
neoDle of Texas have broken air rec
ords by carrying out. both in July and
August more dippings to eradicate ;
cattle tick than have been performed
by any other State in a single month.
The U. S. Department of Agriculture's
CUE
field reports from Texas show for of the Harbor of Refuge at Cape Look
July 760,846 dippings and for August 0ut, the contract for which was let at
740.751 dippings under Federal or i more than $3,000,000 .
State supervision. The reports from) Captain Ridley came here to take
the field indicate that cattle dipping' charge of the locks and dams work
is being systematically carried out in and when Major H. W. Stickle was
this State in a'large number of coun-( transferred to the Baltimore District
lies than ever before. ijn July, 1915, he was given charge of
Mississippi holds second place for ( this office. He was succeeded on the
the number of cattle dippings in a canalization work by Captain Mathew
single month. In August the people son, who is now supervising the work,
of Mississippi had provided 1,056 dip- Major Waldron who will succeed Cap
ping vats and at these vats 705,424
dippings of cattle were performed un-
der Federal or State supervision.)
This is an increase of 35 vats and
15,000 dippings over the work accom-
plished in that State during July. The
legislature of Mississippi recently)
passed a law requiring that ticK eraa
ication shall be taken up by every
county after January 1. The people
of Mississippi, however, are not de-lavine-
their active camnaixn against
the tick until their State law makes i
this compulsory upon them.
BELGIAN KING AGES
UNDER THE STRAIN
Flushing. Netherlands, Sept. 22
King Albert of Belgium has aged un
der the heavy cares and sorrows of
the present time, and his hair is be
ginning to turn gray, according to the
latest news from the Belgian front.
His Majesty never leaves the small
strip of territory over which the Bel
gian flag still flics, refraining from
visits to places in France or to Ste.
Adresse, where his government has
its seat. If the King of England or'
President Poincare want to meet the
Belgian sovereign "they have to go to,
this corner "by the Yser.
The soldiers deeply appreciate the
fact that their sovereign and commander-in-chief
shares with them the
monotony of this marshy bit of coun-,
try, waiting, like them, for the day
when Belgium shall be free once
more. His Majesty is frequently seen
by his men in Jiie treuches, in bar
racks, on the sands and in the dunes.
It is said, indeed, that no one knows
better than he the 25 or 3J miles of
trenches where the Belgian troops
keep vigilant guard day and night.
He is particularly fond of visiting the
advancing posts, and his troops al
ways feel some amount of anxiety
when they descry the king's tall fig
ure traversing the foot bridges only
some hundreds of meters distant
from the enemy.
Queen Elizabeth, on the other hand,
has with her own hands bound up
many badiy-wounded men in the
Ocean Hospital. Here she is in daily
attendance, speaking an encouraging
word here and there to the patients
and distributing tobacco and cigar
ettes. Instances are related in which
she has stood by the dying bed of '
simple aoloiers. Her Majesty is held
in great veneration by the entire
army.

Six Year Old Girl Struck by Moving
Car Yesterday Afternoon.
.While playing in the street with sev-
eraI companions, the 6-year-old daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Dudley C. Gar
rison, of No. 608 South Seventh street,1
was knocked down by a passing street
car, about 4 o'clock yesterday after
noon, on Sixth street, between Church
and Castle. Although not much in
jured, the little girl was badly frighten
ed and was taken to her home and
given medical

attention .
. From information obtained it seems
that little Miss Garrison, with several
J playmates, were running in the center
j of the street as the car in charge of
Motorman M. M. Fipps. approached
and after the car had come to a full
stop and started off again Miss Garri
son darted across the track in front
of the car and was knocked to one
side of the track by one of the vesti
bules. . . "
She was taken to her home and a
physician called, but it is understood
that her injuries were not of a seriouaj
