ney for malefactors of great wealth,
and all the tory mouthpieces of privi
lege. Why are the "interests" supporting
Hughes ?
Because they expect to receive in re
turn for financial -aid, special legisla
tion that will add enormously to the
wealth of the few at the expense of the
many; because they see in Woodrow
Wilson the greatest exponent of democ
racy since-Jackson, and seek to destroy
him lest this nation become a real de
mocracy. What will Hughes do, if elected?
The nearest he has come to saying
what he would do was at Milwaukee,
when he declared that La Follette's
Seaman's bill must be repealed, the Un
derwood tariff replaced by a higher
tariff, and tha "whole administrative
legislative accomplishments wiped off
the books for the good of the country."
What is included in th e legislative
accomplishments?
The Income Tax, the Inheritance Tax,
the Child Labor Law, the Federal Re
serve banking system, the Farm Loan
system, the Good Roads program, the
Federal development of Alaska, the
Tariff Commission, the Federal Trade
Commission, the Shipping bill, auton
omy for the Philippines, the Clayton
Actjsurbing government by injunction,
the preservation of neutrality, the
maintenance of peace, and the enlarged
army and navy.
What would Hughes's election sig
nify? The triumph of reaction and all that
it signifies in thwarting human progress.
