The fighting has been of the most desperate character and while the enemy has paid dearly for his successes, the -Italian losses also have been very heavy. An eye witness from the scene of operations gave the correspopndent details of the extent and bloody nature of the carnage. Enemy reserves were poured in until the Italians were far ! outnumbered. They continued to struggle desperately, however, and in one case a small detachment of Ber- saglieri met the shock of an entire Austrian regiment. Austrian Kaiser- s jaegers displayed unprecedented fe- EE rocity, using stilettos as well as bay- 2 onets in hand-to-hand fighting. But the greatest single instance of heroism and loss was in the case of E several detachments of Alpini, which E held Monte Castelgomberto y against E overwhelming odds until surrounded E completely. Thus encircled they made 3j" repeated charges, but the heavy sur- rounding lines held and the entire par-'E ty was still on the mountain when the E remainder of the Italian line fell back. f: In another case, one brigade of Ber-!" saglieri lost a great number of offi cers and men in the same proportion. The extent of the enemy reserves is shown by their concentration in the average amount of a division for every" kilometre. These divisions have been identified as the sixth, nineteenth, twenty-first, forty-fifth and fifty-second, in. addition to others, not. .identi fied, and a number of German battal ions. The artillery fire also has been the heaviest since the new Italian line was formed. Conditions this morning were virtu-j ally unchanged. Much . depends . upon the ability of the Italians to hold the passes to which they have now re tired commanding the Brerita valley, and the plains.
