Our operators in par ticular have been able to render val uable service for which their train ing has peculiarly fitted them. With in a year we have thus lost mora than one-fourth of our staff and many more men are soon to leave us. In this period of war as the ac tivities and responsibilities of our ser vice, haye steadily increased, it is a source of great pride to know that those upon whom the burden ha.s fallen have met their obligations 'with a measure of faithfulness and intelli gence for which the management is deeply, grateful. By direction of the board of directors and as a partial recognition of the efficiency, of the staff, the life of each employee in the United States while in the serv ice, has been insured for the benefit of his heirs or dependents in the sum -of $1,000'. Because of the greater risk Involved, established companies will not accept insurance upon the lives of our men in foreign service, but the board has itself assumed' liability on their behalf. While the growth in membership was unusually large during the last year the members should nit mistake the policy as to growth. Unlike the privately owned and proflt-moking news agencies, we do not traffic in news. We welcome only such addi tions to membership as strengthen the news gathering facilities of this body. At the close of the year there were 635 evening newspapers, 291 morning newspapers and 61 Sunday I morning newspapers, cr a total of j 1,088, receiving, the service. These' newspapers from the smallest, which i received a 500-word daily telegraph service, to me largest, wnicn re ceives upwards of 50,000 words daily, shows a net increase In membership in the year 1917 of 139, of which 96 are evening, 34 morning and nine Sun day newspapers. In 1917 there was a great expan sion in the Morse leased wire service, more than 2,000 additional miles of wire being added, making the leased wire system of the organization over 53,000 miles in length, and more than twice the mileage of all other press associations combined. Receiving the report on these leased wires, which would stretch more than twice around the world, are 308 evening newspa pers, 269 morning newspapers and 49 Sunday morning newspapers. Wh'le there was a rapid extension of the leased wire service, the increase in the number of papers receiving pony service, smaller than the Morse leased wire, was still greater, show ing a growth of S7 over that of the preceding year. With, the extension of the Morse serice, it was necessary to employ additional Morse operators.
