Further improvement in the British battlefront just north of the river Somme, between Sailly-Laurette and Morlancourt, was achieved last .n'ght by a comparatively small but highly successful attack, made by sol diers from Australia. Driving forward along, the ridge of high ground which runs east and west below Morlancourt, the Australians forced the enemy, back j I lor a distance of about 750 yards on a considerable front. To German officers, 231 others of ether ranks, were made prisoners. British troops also carried out sev eral satisfactory raids at various Points along the front. Here is a part of the criticism of Vi- p tagraph's film version of "Within the Law," clipped from The New York Evening Mail: 'The picturization of 'Within rh Law, shown last night at the Broad way tneatre for the first time, is the most satisfying of all the Til ATI V Til a va turned into films. Mr. Veille?s story contained au ine elements of , a good scenario, besides offering opportunity for elaboration of incident imnnsinhio to achieve in a stage presentation, and or tnese tne Vitagraph directors and piayers nave given full and snrftossfni account. 0 'n the screen version we se consid erably more of Mary Turner's life than was possible of delineation upon the Biage. mere is exhibition of practi cally all that happened time when her employer 'took away her name and gave her a number' and tne Degmning of her fieht to t hi number by methods that were ques- uonaDie yet still within the law. Alice Joyce is -the Mary Turner of the screen story, and it is to the pvr-l lasting credit of herself and her di rector that she has not attempted a copy or Jane Cowl. This is said with all due respect to Miss Cowl; The point is, it was far more difficult for Miss Joyce to be original in a role so closely associated with Miss Cowl's career than to follow the easy path of the copyist. 'Harry, Morey is eauallv satisfvine in the role of Joe Garson, and Adele de Garde has the Dart of Aesrie Lvnch. made famous by Florence Nash. W. P. a. iflarie was in charge of the direc tion. Working under the supervision of Commodore Blackton. this auartet of film folk have made 'Within the Law' even more thrilling in picture form than it was as a play." Within the Law" comes to .the Grand next Monday and Tuesday. CONVINCING TEARS. The most convincing tears ever shed in a motion picture are those that drip from the long black lashes of pretty Margarita Fisher when she real izes the folly that has caused her young husband to forsake her in the role of Alice Gilson in her new Mutual production, "A Square 0 Deal," at the Grand tomorrow. 'I suppose some people think I pro- duce those tears by some mechanical means," laughed Miss Fisher the other day, "but the fact of the matter is that they are real tears called forth "by the tense emotion of the part. "I do not remember any. other part ever appealed to me as this one did, I really projected myself into the char acter of Alice Gilson and found no difficulty at all in crying real tears when the time came that they were supposed to be shed. Never has such a de mand been created within a few months. The people have been so ac customed to be doeed with tablets that it was a relief when they turned to the old-fashioned, honest Liquid Remedy, compounded on the tried tonic of beef, iron and wine, used by millions of weak and dyspeptic nervous people with the greatest success for the last fifty years. Thousands of testimonials have been received from grateful patrons who will never use anything but Iron- ized Paw-Paw in future. They have come to understand that a good liquid tonic supersedes the hard indigestible tablet as electric light does the old fashioned tallow dip."
