AUTO CRASHED INTO
TRAIN AT
Mystery How Occupants of
Car Escaped Death in
the Accident
(Special to The Dispatch.)
New Bern, June 12. Just how C. C.
Cannon, white, and Caesar Nixon, col
ored, escaped death when an automo
bile in which they were riding and
which crashed Into the Norfolk South
ern eaetbound train at Riverdale Mon
day afternoon, escaped death is a mys
tery to those who witnessed the acci
dent The men, whose homes are at Have
lock, were seen by the engineer when
they were some distance from the
track but they had ample time to stop
and the engineer paid no attention to
them. However, instead of stopping,
Nixon, who was driving the car, put
on more "gas" and dashed Into one
side of the mail car at full speed.
The machine was wrecked and both
men thrown out. Cannon was not
badly hurt but the colored man was in
a serious consideration. They were
placed on one of the cars and at once
brought to New Bern and placed in St.
Luke's hospital for treatment. Cannon
was able to leave after being patched j
up but the colored man Is still receiv- j
ing treatment, and while his injuries j
are of a serious nature, the attending t
physician states that he has a chance
for recovery.
Miss Elvera Anderson,, who has for
a number of months held the position
of district nurse in this city, will leave
Friday for a point in the north where
she will take up Red Cross work n one
of the army camps.
Charles L. Abernethy, candidate for
congress from the third district spent
Monday in the city with his family,
leaving at night for Raleigh, where to
day he will appear before the state
board of elections and make a protest
in regard to the primary held in
Wayne and Sampson counties.
Mr. Abernethy wasn't doing much
talking here. He said that he was not
showing his hand for fear that his
political opponents would attempt to
block his contemplated moves but he
intimated that he had a few surprises
up tils sleeve.
He will be represented before' the
board by half a dozen or more lawyers.
including Messrs. D. E. Henderson
and Charles R. Thomas, of the New
Bern bar.
