Lo caui oia as mono
planes are before the nation. But the
Atwood was early on the spot. He be
lieves that his fast engine driving a
small machine carrying a full comple
ment of hell for the Hun can kiss the
roofs of Berlin, knock the spots off
them, get in and out with least danger
and always with the smallest loss be
cause the machines are light and the
men engaged only one.
So Raleigh is having a thrill. It
isn't a bigger one than came during
the days of hope that attended the ap
peal for a cantonment or something
just as good. The promoters of the
big enterprise capitalized at $500,000
are pleased. It is said that no stock
can be bought now. There is no way
for a newspaper man to find this out.
He could not buy if there were and it
would be a piece of pure impudence to
make any sort of bluff in that direc
tion. It is true that John A. Park Is
a publisher and he is mixed up in it,
but Park's business was selling auto
mobiles until he got the newspaper
start -that cannot be stopped.
One month ago these columns told
the story of the government's reported
pleasure with the Atwood machine.
Three days ago a Washington story
dealing in five millions came down and
the promoters of the Atwood machine,
among whom are W. B. Drake, E. C.
Duncan, Howard White, John A. Pane
and Mr. Atwood himself, were not
wholly ignorant of what was going on.
It got out that the government might
build $5,000,000 worth of machines
here. The one-seat flier followed.
Anyway, a lot of people are getting
pleasure out of the situation. Evident
ly the boy who flew his machine many
years ago about the capitol at Wash
ington, who flew from St. Louis to
ew York and managed to live
through a period when it was far. -ionable
for every aviator to commit
suicide by some spectacular stunt, has
used his sense to make something that
will work.
George Creel today writes President
Santord Martin that Mr. Creel will re
lax a resolution made recently against
all public speech-making and will be
with the North Carolina Press associa
tion July 25 for the annual address.
Mr.' Creel found himself so often
victimized that he concluded to hold
his tongue. The cordiality of the invi
tation so impresses him that he is
willing to take a chance among people

Great Damage By Tempest.
San Salvador, June 25 . Great dam
age has been caused in Zacatecoluca
and San Vicente by a tempest of un
precedented severity. Many houses
were razed and a large area of 'the
country at the foot of San Vicente
volcano was devastated by an ava
lanche of volcanic mud from the slopes
of the mountain. Many bzodies of the
people caught in the inundation have
been swept down the Lempa river.

24. The body of Captain Benacca,
Italy's famous aviator, whose machine
fell in flames inside the Austrian lines
dn June 21, after a battle with enemy
