Better Beginnings For Bertie’s Children Foun dation updated the Berr tie County Corrimission- ers on the work it has been performing in Ber tie County to help lo cate three and four year old children and assist in placing them in a preschool setting. “We feel good about what we have been do ing and where we are going,” said Albemarle Smart Start Partnership CEO Dr. Denauvo Robin son. “We are looking for children in Kidfind that are three and four years old who are not in pro grams,” said Better Be ginnings For Bertie’s Children Associate Bob by Holley. Kidfind is a series of programs designed to assist in finding eligible Bertie County children and to help get them into a preschool pro gram. Kidfind also is a way for families to learn about services in the county ranging from health care, childcare and other offerings available at Bertie Coun ty Social Services. Snowfall less than expected BY THAOD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance It could have been worse. It also could have been bet ter. Bertie County Emergency Services Director Mitch Coo per said a late shift in the storm forecast to dump heavy amounts of snowfall in the re gion caused more ice and less snow. The ice, however, turned out to be the cause of rnost of the issues experienced in the county. “Most of what we ended up having in Bertie County was sleet,” Cooper said. “That caused our issues on the high ways.” According to Cooper, there was a just over an inch of ac cumulation in the county be tween ice and snow. During the public comments section at the conclusion of the last Bertie County Com missioners meeting, Martin Community Col lege Bertie Campus In terim Facility Director Norman Cherry asked about the changing of the community colleges districting in the coun ty Currently two com munity colleges, Martin Community College and Roanoke Chowan Com munity College serve Bertie County. The North Carolina State Board of Com munity Colleges made guidelines of which areas in Bertie Coun ty each college could serve. According to the 2016 State Board of Commu nity Colleges Service Area Report, Martin Community College has exclusive authority for curriculum and adult basic education in Wind sor Township, which in cludes the county seat and the only public high school.
