BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE APRIL 17,20191 9 The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 Sports LA girls respond after first TIC loss MERRY HILL - Lawrence Academy’s varsity soft- ball team responded to its first league loss in a big way on Monday. The Warriors (11-3 overall, 9-1 in the Tar heel Independent Con ference) amassed 22 hits and cruised past Al bemarle School 32-6 in a league game at home. The game didn’t start well for Lawrence, how ever. The Colts scored five runs in the top of the first inning to grab a quick 5-0 lead. It was short lived. The Warriors re sponded with 13 runs in their half of the first frame, then scored nine in the second, eight in the third and two more in the fourth to win by the mercy rule. The big first inning was highlighted by a single by Bailey Dunlow, a single by Morgan Sto- tesberry, two errors, a single by Megan Stotes- berry, a double by Isa belle Phelps, a double by Rebekah Goodwin and a triple by Lindsay Smith. Phelps (double, tri ple) led Lawrence with four hits and five RBIs. Goodwin (double, three RBIs), Smith (two tri ples, six RBIs), Bailey Dunlow (RBI) and Mor gan Stotesberry (six RBIs) added three hits for the Warriors. Claire Dail added two hits and an RBI, while Megan Stotesberry (RBI), Lauren Smith (RBI), Isabella Conigli- aro and Brianna Faulk (RBI) provided one hit Softball From 8 the Falcons in the top of the first inning. Northeastern used two hits and a sacrifice fly to score a run in the bottom of the first in ning. Two hits and a groundout led to the Ea gles’ second run in the bottom of the second. Byrum scattered nine hits on the mound to pick up the win. She struck out five and walked one. In the second game, Bertie tallied five runs in the bottom of the sec ond inning on its way to completing the double- header sweep. Byrum, Eure and Mel- dick had RBI base hits, while Cowand doubled in the frame. The Falcons (4-2 NEC) scored a run in the first when Dickens tripled and came around on a double by Byrum. Bertie tacked on an other run in the third inning on hits from Dick ens and Byrum and a Northeastern error. Byrum was the win ning pitcher again for the Falcons. She struck out two and walked one. Bertie’s defense also Fourth each. Conigliaro worked all five innings on the mound. She allowed five hits and six runs (three earned) with six strike outs and three walks. On Thursday (April 11), Lawrence Academy suffered its first confer ence loss in more than four years after being upset at home by North east Academy, 12-10. The Warriors had won 44 consecutive TIC games between 2015- 2019, including eight this year, before the Eagles pulled off the historic victory. Northeast scored five runs in the first three in nings for a 5-0 lead, then Lawrence responded with eight runs in the bottom of the third frame to take an 8-5 advantage, but the visi tors scored four runs in the top of the sixth and three in the seventh for a 12-8 lead. Lawrence amassed a pair of runs in its half of the seventh but came up short. The Warriors man aged just five hits against Northeast pitch er Jessie Martin, but they took advantage of 14 walks and four errors by the Eagles to score their runs. Phelps and Dunlow led the way with two hits each for Lawrence, while Lauren Smith pro vided the other hit. Hailey Barnes started on the mound for Law rence. Meldick and Cowand turned a double play in the first inning, while Castel- loe threw to Dickens to catch a runner trying to steal second base in the third inning. The next day (April 11), Bertie suffered a nonconference loss to Northslde, 8-4 at home, dropping to 6-8 overall. Rachel Hoggard pitched for the Falcons. She walked one and struck out two. Bertie’s defense com mitted seven errors against the Panthers. Dickens' Byrum and Castelloe each had a pair of hits against North- side, while Freeman added the other hit. From 8 Open in August.
