Albemarle Regional Health Services (ARHS) issued its current regional COVID-19 update on Friday, Sept. 17. The updates are released on Friday each week, showing the updated information on vaccines, active cases and facility outbreaks. The re port includes Bertie County. According to the report. there have been 2,262 lab confirmed cases of COVID-19 for the county, with 2,130 of those cases considered re covered. There were 84 ac tive COVID-19 cases report ed. This is an increase of new 93 COVID-19 positive since the report from Sept. 10. The number of current positive cases also decreased by 100 cases. Sadly, there have been 48 deaths due to the virus. ARHS is reporting one new death related to COVID-19 in Bertie County. The individu al was in the 18-24 age range. One can learn how to change the game by at tending Game Changers 3:30-6 p.m. every Tues day and Thursday, be ginning Oct. 5 at Place of Possibilities located at 1144 Hexlena Rd in Aulander. The Rev. Dr. Laura Early will be teaching 20 passionate students on how to make a dif ference through leader ship skills and more. Game Changers will be providing one hour of homework assistance along with recreations for the student that will be attending. Fun Day was a big success BRANDICE HOGGARD Staff Writer ASKEWVILLE - Fun Day in Askewville took place Saturday Sept. 18. Many families came out and enjoyed the Askewville Fun Day activities what consisted of yard sales, vendors, bounce houses for children, crafts, food and entertainment. RT Johnson Band, along with the Steadfast Quartet performed live at Askewville Fun Day for entertainment. The events for the day all began at different times that morning. The yard sale opened up at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. Following the yard sale opening the vendors opened at 9 a.m. and then live entertainment along with all of the children’s activities began between 10-10:30 a.m. Gloria Bryant, Mayor of Askewville, said “Askevyville Fun Day had a good crowd. The crowd was a bit smaller than the past, but was good considering Covid.” All of these fun activities took place at the Askewville Community Building. The community building is located right beside Askewville Preschool at 121 Askewville Rd. The vendors set up inside the community building for the event. At their monthly meeting here Sept. 14, members of the Bertie County Board of Education discussed a pre sentation from BCS Direc tor of Curriculum and In struction Linda Bullock on a proposal that would give parents the choice to enroll their students in the dis trict’s virtual school instead. Bullock said principals at the county’s seven schools surveyed parents’ prefer ence for a virtual learning option. Of the less than 20 percent of those who re sponded, results ranged from 51 percent in favor at West Bertie Elementary to 22 percent at Windsor and Col erain Elementary Schools. The average for Bertie Mid dle School and the senior high programs of Bertie High and Bertie Early College was around 37 percent.
