NORVIN C. DUNCAN , This column is supposed to con tain something with a religious slant. Our aim is to present some thing suggestive, something to stftn lilate thinking But it sometimes contains matter not so directly re ligious. The writer has a funny bone as "well as a liver, and this column, can hardly escape a hum orous twist. In fact we have decided' conviction that humor is necessary to a well balanced re ligion. Most of us take ourselves too seriously, reflecting, perhaps, a disordered liver rather , than in tellieent conviction. It is rather necessary that we be able to laugh at ourselyes occasionally. Humor is a saving grace, Jhe spice which keeps, even our religion, fromtast ins flat. I imagine that the laymen get many a laugh out of the humorous situations created by an over se rioUs parson. Even our texts and subjects are sometimes so incon gruous that our most serious ef forts must provoke the men in the pews to smile.1 It was just too much for me when I listened to a fellow parson preaching to mothers about how to rear their children and taking, the home at Bethany as his model. Of course that was a sweet home, and lovely, but what could two old maids and a bachelor know about raising chil dren? , A mother struggling with a household full of children would naturally want to know how some mother handled the situation. Once, in mv earlier days, with much earnestness" and attempt at elo quence, I quoted John the Bap tist's, "I say unto you that God is able of these Stones to raise up children unto Abraham." I accom panied it with, a great gesture, pointing my finger directly toward Mr. and Mrs. Stone (two of my most faithful members) who, with their three children sat on the front seat. No one in the con gregation caught it,but 1 realized it as soon as I said it, and it quite threw me off my balance. During the rest of the sermon I was not quite so eloquent, nor so free with my gestures. ' There are many such incidents in my own ministry, which I want to share with my friends and let them laugh with me and at me. Laughing Around the World With IRVIN S.
