C Camp No. 9) Tuesday saw the first occupancy J of Kauffman Lodge, which will be used as quarters by the officers staff of G. C. Camp No. 9. The lodge, built under the direc tion of Lieutenant Pickell, construc tion officer, was named in honor of. Captain Frank . E. Kauffman, camu commander. It occupies a uicturesaue snot on the side of the hill rising back of the camp. From here a magnificent view of the entire camp and the' distant mountains is had. The lodge is a large log building and, as Captain KauffmaTmaTkedTtt'sr-Tre pretty cabin New Captain Coming To C. C. Camp No. 9 Captain Frank E. Kauffman, in charge of Civilian Conserva tion Camp No. 9 on the ouUkirt of Franklin, it to be replaced soon, according to an announce ment, by Captain ..Day of the Pisgah Forest camp. The boys in Camp No. 9 have grown to be very fond of Captain Kauff man and will regret to see him leave. A rustic entrance is being built of poplar logs and a rustic bridge has already been completed across the stream ' near the camp. Approaches to the camp also are being improved. The roads in the vicinity are being covered with crushed stone from a nearby quar ry. On the hill back of the camp there has been raised a large pole from which Old Glory can be seen Waving in the breeze. C. Camp No. 9) . Sports are getting under way now at Civilian Conservation Camp No. 9, with Captain McIIwaine, welfare and athletic officer, in charge. Some - good games are -in prospect,-for-it has been found that there are a -number of first, class, basketball players in the camp. Much3nterest is being shown in boxing; it seems to be getting a hold on all of the boys. Some real fighting material has been found in the. camp and we are hoping t display it before the public. Boxing bouts are to be staged between this camp arid some of the other camps in this vicinity. T. A. Lyerly is manager of the C. C. C. No. 9 boxers and will arrange any matches in which out siders wish to participate. Willis, soil chemist for the Agri cultural Experiment Station, sug gests using a little alum at the rate of one ounce to each square' yard of ground under the spread of the branches. He has found that the white color usually follows the land being made alkaline with limestone. If it is made acid again the pink color will return. C. G. Pay Increased Much to the delight of some of the Civilian Conservation Camp boys, a raise has been made in their wages. Under the new pay scale, a limited number of the recruits will receive $45 a month, instead of $30. Most of the boys, however, will remain on the $30 basis. Only a partial list has been completed of those who will be raised to $45 a month. .
