BRYSON Tax Supervisor, Macon County Freak Weather Spring Days Routed at o " ra p ii ijuu w ucgius iu I an Franklin and other parts of Ma con cohnty experienced some freak ish April weather this week. The first of the week it was per fect spring weather, with the tem perature so mild that fruit trees came but with profuse blossoms and working mch came off with their coats and women walked forth in flimsy new spring frocks. Wednesday a change was in the air. signified by strong winds that raised such a dust the horizon was beclouded. Then Thursday we had the tin usual sight of snow falling midst beautiful spring blossoms. Fear was felt for many freshly planted gardens, but some weather forecasters said they believed most plantings would escape injury. This paper ventures no prediction. The editor is like an old man at Blow ing Rock who commented: "No body but dern fools and strangers fry to predict the weather around here." N. C. GIVEN $7,309,990 Federal relief grants to North Carolina until April 1 amounted to $7,309,990. according to figures re leased in Washington. Clippings POLITICIANS ARE PAINED . Governoi FLhringhaus' caustic ref erence to the "mugwumps" at the Jackson Day dinner in Raleigh sounds a whole lot like a common plaint from political leaders when ever the voters begin to show signs of human intelligence and give evidence of doing a little in dependent thinking instead of swal lowing whatever line of hoop-la and hooey the" aforesaid leaders deem it cither personally or politically expedient to pass out for consump tion by the "deer peepul." We do not subscribe to the idea that political discipline must neces sarily come from the top. We en tertain the naive belief that some of the ordinary run of voters have very nearly as much sense as the I men tney elect to ottice, ana tnat it is quiite in order for disciplinary pressure to be brought to bear up on leaders bv their followers when occasion demands Rigid party discipline may be a fine thing for those sterling patri ots who are filled with an urge to remain in office, and beyond doubt there are times when it is both necessary and desirable. An equal ly fine thing, in the opinion of many, is a growing tendency upon the part of the non-offiee-holdki public to do its own thinking and to summon the visceral stamina necessary to transform such thoughts into action, aft tlic voci ferous applause of the Jackson Day dinners to the contrary notwith standing-1.
