Avoids Crash
Pilot's Skill Prevents Plane
Crack-Up
Joe Musleh proved himself a goo.
pilot Sunday, landing his plane on
one wheel at Thomas Field and
thereby avoiding what might have
been a serious mishap.
Musleh, who brought his three
passenger Eagkrock plane to
Franklin last Friday, was kept
busy Saturday and Sunday carry
ing passengers. About the middle
of the afternoon Sunday something
went wrong with the plane's land
ing gear. The pilot didn't know
it until he landed: but he quickly
realized it then and managed this
ship so well, rolling along on one
wheel, that he avoided a crack-up.
Later it was discovered that one
of the landing gear supports had
broken, due to a flaw in the metal.
This was quickly repaired and
Musleh continued flying.
The flyer announced Tuesday
that he had decided to remain here
another week.
Charles O'Dell, another commer
cial flier who planned to bring his
plane here last week-end, flew over
the town but, after looking over a
field he had rented, decided not to
land.
Ed Kerr, Watauga, Dies
Tuesday Afternoon
Ed Kerr, 65, died at his home on
Watauga Tuesday afternoon. Fun
eral services were conducted at the
Watauga Baptist church Wednes
day afternoon by the Rev. George
Clot r, assisted by the Rev. Eugene
R. EUer, pastor of the Franklin
Baptist church.
Mr. Kerr, suffering from cancer,
had been in poor health for a num
ber of years. He was a member
of the Franklin Baptist church,
coming here from Mecklenburg
county several years ago.
Surviving him is his widow and
a brother in Gastonia.
Virginia Chickens May
Bear Tattoo Marks
In an attempt to foil chicken
thieves, poultry raisers of Virginia
decided at their last meeting to
experiment with tattoo marks on
the fowls.
The plan calls for a nation wide
tatooing of all chickens. The mark
is put in the web of the wine
with an instrument similar to a
pair of pliars. The 10,000 chickens
stolen in the Roanoak area this
year were valued at $7,000.
To Speed Up Big Ships
1he name "fathometer" has been
given to an instrument which makes
it possible to drive a ship at full
speed safely.
One difference between the Presi
dent and Vice-President is that
when the latter goes on a fishing
trip nobody knows it. Life.
