DIO—4tc—J&J—D31 Cheap Mixed Feeds May Prove Costly The farmer who buys livestock feeds according to price tags only may find that he has indulged m a bit of false economy, declares Dr J O. Halverson, animal nutri tionist at the North Carolina ex periment station. The cheapest feeds are not al ways' the most economical, Dr. Halverson points out, and espe cially is this true in the case ot mixed feeds high in fiber content but low in feed value. Proteins, fats, and carbohydrates make up the food value in mixed feeds, while fiber only adds weight and bulk and is harder to digest. Dr. Halverson cautions farmers always to read the feed tag'or the list of ingredients printed on the bag when buying mixed feeds. In this way he can be sure of the percentages of protein and crude fiber. . . ■ . As an example, the nutntionist points out that cottonseed meal containing 41 per cent protein costs more than that containing only .50 per cent, yet the higher priced feed may well be worth the dif ference in price. ^ , This difference in protein content is due to the amount of hulls ground with the meal. The more hulls, says Dr. Halverson, the more bulk and weight, but the less pro tein and other' food elements. Not only is this true with cot tonseed meal, but with wheat dhngs -and shorts . ais’ well. Ihe more bran used, the lower the pro tein content and the larger the amount of crude fiber. Some of the feeds that should be studied are: alfalfa, cottonseed, linseed, flax, milk, oat, wheat, corn, and soybean products, the nutrition ist declares. ■ I 1 N. y Wishing All of Our Friends a Merry, Merry Christmas and a Happy, Prosperous New Year Sutton’s Cafe FRANKLIN, N.
