DOUBLE WEDDING ANNOUNCED A double wedding of much inter est to friends throughout the county was that of Miss Pauline Shields to Jay B, Houston and Miss Shirley Duvall to Robert Houston, which was solemnized in Walhalla, '3. C,, on Sunday, July 5, and announced this week. Mrs. Ja,y B. Houston is a daugh ter iof Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Shields, of lotla, and ^Irs. Robert Hoflston, is, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Duvall, also of lotla. Botji brides are graduates of the Fra^iklin high school and of the Perry business school at Bruns wick', Ga. For the wedding both brides were attired in blue crepe with match ing accessories. The bride-grooms are brothers, sons of Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Hous ton, of lotla, and are employed by the T, M. Strider Construction company and Philip S. Hoyt at Clarkesville, Ga. MRS. HIGGINS’ MUSIC CLASS GIVES RECITAL A recital of much interest was given Tuesday night, December 22, in the courthouse by Mrs. Harry Higgins’ music pupils. The program featured Christmas music and in cluded vocal and instrumental selec tions, A vocal solo was rendered by Mrs. Frank Bloxham, of High lands, a special guest of the eve ning. Approximately a hundred persons attended the recital, following which the p,upils surprised Mrs. Higgins with a shower of many lovely Christmas gifts. CORBilN-POORE MARRIAGE ANNOUNCED The following announcement is from the December 27 issue of The Anderson (S. C.) Independent: Mrs. J. L. Corbin announces the marriage of her daughter, Helen, to Mr. Haskell Poore, Thursday, December 24, 1936. Anderson, S. C. The announcement of the mar- -riage of Miss Corbin and Mr. Poore will be of much interest to their friends. The ceremony w'as per formed on Thursday evening by the Rev. E. C. White. The bride was lovely in a navy blue SiUit with accessories to match. Her corsage was lilies of the valley. Descended from families of prom inence in North Carolina, the bride is a granddaughter of the late John L. Corbin, of Franklin, N. C. She received her education in the city schools of Anderson, and has made many friends tby her pleasing personality and charm, ,and is a special favorite in social circles. Mr. Poore is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Poore of this city. He received his education in the schools of Anderson, and is a promising young business man. He holds a Macon Theatre GIVE “AULD LANG SYNE” PARTY FOR OLD FRIENDS On Saturday evening Miss Caro lyn Nolen and Miss Elizabeth Slagle were joint-hostesses at an “Auld Lang Syne” party at “Caro lyn’s Cottage” at Arrowood, honor ing their Cartoogechaye friends who were home for the holidays. The cottage, with its Christmas decorations of holly, mistletoe and burning red tapers, formed a per fect setting for the gala occasion. Games that “we used to play” were recalled and enjoyed for the sake of “Auld Lang Syne.” Christmas fruits and candies were served by the hostesses. Out-of-town guests present were: Miss ^fary Louise Slagle, of Co lumbus, Ohio, and her house-guest. The program included 'both vocal and piano selections. The hall was fittingly trimmed with Christmas decorations. CHILDREN ENTERTAINED AT BIRTHDAY PARTY Mrs. W. T. Wright entertained at a party on Monday, December 21, at her home on West Main street, honoring her daughter, Ann, on her sixth birthday anniversary. The living room and dining room, which were thrown ensuite, were beautifully decorated in Christmas colors, and the season motif was further carried out in the refresh ments. A Christmas tree, beauti fully lighted for the occasion, bore a gift for each little guest. Later the guests found their place at the dining room table by place cards representing a tree. Bags of fruits and candy were given as souvenirs. Delicious cake and ice cream were served. The children present were: Betty and Howard Horsley, Elizabeth Ann Phillips, Gussie Leach, Jr., Bobby Williams, Sally Lou Moore, Paul Anderson and Percy Dill Wright. Mrs. Floyd Welch and son, Eugene, and two daughters. Misses Thelma and Pauline^ Welch, and Miss Annie Laura Bain spent Sun day in Burnsville with Mrs. Welch’s sister Mrs. Grady Bailey, the for mer Miss Zula Ray of Franklin, Hugh Johnston, who has been attending the Berry school at Mt Berry Ga.,, spent the holidays with his mother, Mrs. T. Dowdle, and Mrs. Eloise G. Franks. Mrs. Ellard, who is taking a course in beauty culture in Atlanta, Ga., arrived last week to spend the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Stribling. Mr. and Mrs. Zeb Gibson and three children returned to their home in Winston-Salem Saturday after a visit with their mothers, jMrs. Jennie Gibson and Mrs. J. L. West, Sr., at West’s Mill. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Riddick and two daughters spent the latter part of last week in Swainsboro, Ga., visiting relatives and friends. Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Brown and Airs. H. O. Cozad went to Albany, Ga., Saturday, to see Mrs.. Cozad’s sister, Mrs. E. E. Watkins, who has been critically ill. They re turned to Franklin Monday. Mrs. Watkins was reported to toe some what improved. Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Sutton and two children, of Decatur, Ga., have been spending several days with Mrs. Sutton’s mother, Mrs. A. W. Horn, and sister, Mrs. J. E. Perry, at their home on Harrison avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Rogers Dalton and “Top” Dalton, of Gastonia, arrived Wednesday of last week to spend Christmas with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Dalton, at West’s Mill, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shields, of Franklin. On their re turn to Gastonia Sunday they were accompanied by Mrs. Dalton’s mother, who will spend this week there. Mr. and !Nfrs. Walter West and young daughter, of Old Fort, are s])cnding several days with Mrs. West’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Franklin, at their home on Route 4. J. W. Sorrells, formerly of Ashe ville, is now making his home with his son, Carl Sorrells, and Mrs. Sorrells at their home at West’s Mill. R. D. Sisk and C. R. Zachary spent the latter part of the past week in Bakersville visiting Mr. Sisk’s wife, who is spending some time at the home of her daughter, Mrs, A. E. Gouge, and Dr. Goufje where Mrs. Sisk is under the care of the latter. Mrs. Si'sk was re ported to be much improved. Claude Tallent, of Morganton, spent Christmas with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Tallent, on Route 3. Dr. and Mrs. J. H, Fouts spent Friday at Glenville visiting Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Watson. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Matlock, of Winston-Salem, spent the latter part of last week with their par ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Matlock, and Mr, and Mrs. J. M. Morrison, at West’s Mill. Verlin Swafford, who is attend ing Cecil’s Business college in Ashe ville, is spending this week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Swafford. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Dalrymple and family and Miss Laura Dal rymple, of Raleigh, John Dalrymple, of Wilson, and Paul Dalrymple, of Colerain, spent the latter part of the past week with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Dalrymple, at their home on Cartoogechaye. Harry Bryson, who is vforking in Winston-Salem, visited 'his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Bryson, at their home at West’s Mill, last week. Mrs. D. G. Stewart is spending several days in Asheville, visiting her daughter, Mrs. Virginia Briggs. James Hames returned to his home in Atlanta, Ga., Sunday, after spending the latter part of the past week visiting Doyle Blaine. Robert Curtis has returned to his home here after spending a few days in Atlanta with his brother, Gaston Curtis, and Mrs. Curtis. Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Siler and family, of Athens, Tenn., spent the first of the week with their aunt, Miss Lily Rankin, at her home on liiverview street. Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Kesler and son, Billy Angel Kesler, of Salis bury, arrived Saturday for a visit with Mrs. Kesler’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Angel, Sr. Walter L. Jones, of Flats, was among the business visitors here Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. T. Blumenthal and children, of Royston, Ga., and Max Blumenthal, of Toccoa, Ga., spent Christmas here with their brother Moses Blumen|hal, and family.
