Have Fun On Night That Witches Ride On . Hallowe'en, when witches ride and weird spirits reign, is one of the 'best times in the year to give a party. "All formality must vanish. Give yourself over to the spirit of the occasion and, young or old, you will have a good ' time," said Ruth Current, state home agent at State college. , Owls, black cats with curled tails, witches, moons, and other Hallowe'en decorations cut from orange and black paper; pumpkins, corn stalks, red apples, and autumn leaves; Jack-o-lahterns, silhouettes, and scarecrows all add a weird atmosphere. . Silver ' Christmas corn can be , i . woven into a spicier weD in one corner. Paper spiders placed in the center give it a realistic effect. The lighting is important. There should be plenty of Jack-o-lanterns. Other lights should be dimmed with orange and red crepe paper. Bobbing for apples, lucky pea nuts, and fortune-telling appeal to all comers on a time like this.' For a large group, several fortune-telling devices can be placed in different parts of the room, with the guests going from one to an other. , Or a witches' den may be con structed, dimly lighted with Jaci-o-lanterns, and with a witch sitting inside 'beside her cauldron to tell the fortunes of all who enter. A gruesome ghost. story told by some one who has a gift for story telling brings a dramatic climax to the evening. Then for the "eats." Cider and doughnuts, or sandwiches and cof fee, or1 pumpkin pie with whipped cream, or, ginger bread with coffee or cider maybe you will want to add nuts, apples, or popcorn to the list. New Clutch Reduces Driving Effort Driving effort is greatly reduced, and control over the car is increas ed, by the new "Tiptoe-matic" clutch, of revolutionary design, which is being introduced on all the 1938 Chevrolets, both passenger cars and trucks. The mechanism operates on a principle which has already had some applications in long-range ar tillery, hydraulic presses, railcar -couplings, and similar heavy-duty installations, although it has never before been adapted to use in the automotive field. Many months of testing, both at the General Motors proving ground and on the high way, preceded its adoption on the 1938 Chevrolet. The central unit is a spring dia: phram of heavy heat-treated steel, shaped something like a concave disc, or, more accurately, a' "dish ed" washer, with 18 tapering steel fingers pointing inward from its edge. . ; When the clutch is in the engag ed position, the entire outer rim of the disc fcears against the pres sure plate, providing complete dis tribution" of the driving load. When the pedal is depressed for disen gagement, however, the pressure ol the throwout bearing on the inner ends of the fingers causes a dia phram action, comparable to that which takes place when the bottom of an oil can is pressed. The outer ends of the fingers, toward the rim of the disc, pivot on the foremost of two fulcrum rings, one of which is located on either side of the diaphram. This causes the rim of the diaphram to spring away from the friction disc against which its own stiffness has held it' and dis engagement results. At the same- time, engagement characteristics have undergone marked improvement. The fact that the entire rim oi 'the . diaphram bears on the clutch disc assures complete distribution of the driving load.. Uniform ' load distribution around the pressure plate, and soft er application of the load, are af fected by the substitution of the 18 tapering . steel fingers, stamped integral with the spring, for the three pressure levers of 1937. Be cause the disc pivots on the ful crums provided by the two steel rings, friction is held at a mini mum, not only when the car is new but after long service,; when the conventional clutch develops notice able friction drag. The design of the new mechan ism, Chevrolet engineers point out, is such that it reciuires no liiihfrirn- tion throughout the life of the car.' Home Coming Day At Zion A. M. E.
