Baf tram's Description Of North Carolina Azaleas Visitors to Wayah and other parts of the mountains in this section, who are lost in admiration and wonder at the beauty of the azalea blossoms, will be interested in the following ' description. The great English botanist, William " Bartram, who travelled in this part of the mountains about the end of the eighteenth century, making a study of the varied plant life in that early day, gives vivid pictures of the pri meval beauty he discovered. In one of his books, "The Travels of Wil liam Bartram" he thus describes the flame azalea: "Firey Azalea, flaming on the ascending hills or wavy surface of the gliding brooks the epithet 'firey' I annex to this most cele brated species of Azalea as being expressive of the appearance of its flowers, which are, in general, of the color of the finest red lead, orange and bright gold, as well as yellow and cream color. The various splendid colors are not only in separate plants, but frequently all the varieties of shades are seen on separate branches on the same plant; and the clusters of $he blos soms cover the shrubs in such in credible profusion on the hillsides, that suddenly opening to view from dark shades, we are alarmed with the apprehe'nsion of the hill being set on fire. This is certainly the most gay and, brilliant : flowering, shrub yet known; it grows in little copses or clumps,, in open forests as well as dark groves, with other shrubs about the bases of hills, especially where brooks or rivulets wind among them. The bushes sel dom rise above six or seven feet in height, and generally about three, four and five, but branch and spread their tops greatly, the young leaves are but very small whilst the shrubs are in bloom, from which circumstance the plant exhibits a greater show of splendor."
