THURSDAY, JULY 13, I93fl Thirteen Southern National Forests are Being Developed Vacationists visiting, the South ern National Forests during the summer are urged by the officials of the U. S, Forest Service to do 'more than "see the sights." Spec tacular vistas of verdant valleys and breath-taking views of the towering mountains of the Blue Kidge, Ozark, and Ouachita chains are so impressive that the behold er is apt to overlook, the commer cial importance of forests, Recrcationists are reminded that the 13 National Forests of the South, containing nine million acres of government owned mountain and forest land, are being develop ed j so that all of their resources, not just their natural beauty, will serve the public. Mile after mile of forest covered slopes and plains stand as monuments to the forest fire fighting effectiveness of the thousands of CCC cnrollees led by "state, and federal , forest officers. Steel lookout towers atop a hun dred peaks arc the points of van tage from which fire guards keep constant vigil to protect the Na tional F'orests the public's forests from their arch enemy FIRE! Water is one of the most impor tant natural resources. Forest cov ered slopes give rise to rivulets that join to make creeks, that flow together to form rivers, that pro duce water power, bear commerce, and, in so many ways, contribute to the well being of mankind. Many cities are dependent. upon the regu lated flow of water from forested areas for their domestic supply. Mature timber in National F'or ests is sold for use by local wood using industries. Forest rangers mark the trees that may be cut. A crop of young trees is always present. Selective logging is the term applied to this method of timber harvest. More than $000,000 worth of ripe timber was .sold from Southern National Forests during ihe ' past year. The receipts were deposited in the U. S. Treasury, put "a. total of 35 per cent of this amount and a like per cent of all ;ross . receipts from National For ests is returned to the counties Within which the forests are locat ed to be used for public schools, roads, and bridges. . Wildlife is an important forest resource and within National ' For ests there is carried forward a game and fish conservation and propagation program. As areas be come satisfactorily stocked, public hunting and fishing is allowed. Administered by the U. S. For est Service, the National Forest Service, the National Forests dif fer from other areas of public land in that all natural resources are developed to be utilized by, and for the benefit of, the public. Picnic areas, camp sites, trails, roads, and lakes round out the National For est program of the "greatest good for . the largest number." Visitors to the South this sum mer are urged to make their tour a roving study of natural resources. In order to assist them in visiting the Southern National Forests, a brochure of maps ; and pamplets, including "Our Forests, What They Are and What They Mean To Us", has been prepared and will be sent free. Address requests to the Reg ional Forester, U. S. -Forest Ser vice, Atlanta, Ga. Otto By' MISS HAZEL BRADLEY The WFA workers at Otto rec reational center, Mrs. Foster and Mrs, Norton,, announced that $9.80 was made on Saturday evening, July 1, when they entertained with a square dance and some other entertainment. Mr., and Mrs, Tom Alley, of Cullowhee, visited Mrs Alley's par ents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Mozeley, last week-end. The third quarterly conference of the Macon circuit met with an all-day service at Dryman Chapel on Sunday, July 9. The presiding' elder delivered an interesting ser mon. All churches of the charge were represented and gave a very good report. Miss Hazel Bradley visited West ern Carolina Teachers' college at Cullowhee Monday, July 10. Miss Kate Curtis, of Otto, was married to Mr, Ed Keener, of Clayton, Ga!j on July 4. The couple are living in Clayton. Demand Increases For Quality Eggs There is a continuous and in 'creasing demand on the part o the consuming public for quality eggs. F.gg quality, in general, involves the size, shape, color and shell texture from an externa) stand point. Internally, the air cell should he firm, small and regular; the percent of firm albumin should be large: the yoke should : have standing up quality; the egg should be free 4rom blood spots, embryo development, foreign bodies, and obnoxious odors and tastes. To get this quality under sum mer conditions, says Prof. Roy S Dearstyne, head of the State col lege poultry department, see to it that only infertile eggs are pro duced. Aside from breeding pur poses, . the males serve no useful purpose in the flock. Fertile eggs .levelop rapidly during warm weather and definite embryos may be observed ; in several days in such eggs," -he said. "Poultrymen should also avoid dirty nests," he continued. "Dirty nests mean soiled eggs which must be cleaned before marketing. Eggs should never be washed unless they' are to enter channels of in mediate consumption. "Eggs should be collected sev eral times each day. Jn hot weather this is a necessity, since summer heat plus moisture leads to a breaking down of the white and the yolk of the egg and the air cells become greatly enlarged due to rapid evaporation. On collection, the eggs should be stored in a cool moist room at a temperature ranging from 32 to 50 degrees F." . Finally, Prof. Dearstyne recom mended that summer eggs be cand led and that frequent deliveries be made, especially where storage facilities are inadequate.
