Billings. GARDEN CLUB TO MEET WITH MRS. J. E. S. THORPE The Franklin Garden Club will meet on Monday afternoon, Octob er 2, at 3 o'clock, at the home of Mrs. J.. E. S. Thorpe at G'ishiers. Mrs. John Archer, Mrs. Herbert E. Church and Mrs.' James A. Sut ton, will be associate hostesses. All members are urged to attend. W. M. S. ZONE MEETING TO BE HELD AT IOTLA The zone meeting of the Wo man's Missionary societies of the Methodist churches of Macon coun ty will meet with the Iotla Metho dist church on Saturday, October 7. The meeting is scheduled to be gin promptly at 10 o'clock, with Mrs. Fred Slagle, zone leader, pre siding. Mrs..F. E. Branson, of Can ton, district secretary' of the Waynesville district will be pres ent and talk to the group. Mrs. Dale Stentz, of Lake Junaluska, will be in charge of the devotion. All churches in the county are urged to send a large representa tion. BAPTIST W. M. S. TO MEET OCTOBER 5 The Woman', Missionary Society of. the Franklin Baptist church will meet at the church on Thurs day afternoon, October 5, at 3 o'clockMrs. A. R. E. L. CLASS ELECTS OFFICERS Mrs. Jack E. Weyman was re elected as- teacher of the T. E. L. class of the Franklin Baptist church at a meeting on Tuesday afternoon when the class met at the home of Mrs. John Archer, on Church street for 1 the regular monthly business and social meet ing. There were 21 members pres ent. , Mrs. Roy Gibson, president, pre sided over the business session, and after the reports from the various committees were given, the officers' to serve for the ensuing year were, elected. The group captains elected for the quarter were Mrs. Verna Greene May, Mrs. Carey Patton, Mrs. Floyd Welch, and Mrs. John Roper. Talks were made by Mrs. W. C. Penn and Mrs. Jack E. Weyman offering helpful and ' interesting suggestions for the class work for the coming year. The hostess served refreshments at the conclusion of the meeting. METHODIST W. M. S. TO MEET WITH MRS. SAM ROGERS The Woman's Missionary society of the Franklin Methodist church will meet on Thursday afternoon, October 5, at 3 o'clock, at the home of Mrs. Sam L. Rogers at Rogers Hall. All members are urged to attend. Dr. and Mrs. A. E.' Gouge, .of Bakersville, came over Saturday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Gouge's aunt, Miss Jennie Guy; at West's Mill Saturday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Wiley T. Rogers and son, have returned to their home in Atlanta, after a visit here with Mr. Rogers' mother, Mrs. Sam L. Rogers. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Willis, of Greer, S. C, recently spent the week-end with Mrs. Willis' par ents, Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Dowdle. 1 Sol" Sanders, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sanders, who spent last week in New York attending, the World's Fair and visiting friends, has re turned to his home here. Lee Guffee, who has spent six weeks in the Naval hospital in Portsmouth, Va., for treatment, returned to his home on Bidwell street recently somewhat improved. Miss Doris Seay spent the week end with her parents and attended the Corbin reunion. Mrs. W. B. Cribble, of Wheeling, W. Va., came in last week to make her home here for a while. Mr. Gribble is now employed by the government and stationed at Wayah depot. Mrs. C. S. Brown, Jr., came in Sunday from Ellijay, Ga., to spend a week with her mother, Mrs. H. 0. Cozad and mother-in-law, Mrs. C. S. Brown, Sr. Mr. and Mrs. James E. Brook shire, Jr., have returned from a two weeks' trip to Washington, D. C.f and New York where they at tended the World's Fair. While in New York Mrs. Brookshire attend ed the reunion of her class of Alt. Sinai hospital. . Mr. and Mrs. Charles Matlock have returned to their home in Winston-Salem after spending the latter part of the week at West's Mill with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Matlock, and Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Morrison. Mr. and Mrs. James A. McAl lister and son, Daniel, of New York City, are visiting Mrs. Mc Allister's mother, Mrs. W. W. Sloan, at "Sunnyside Farm." Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey Cun ningham and daughter have re turned to their home in Winston Salem, after a visit with Mrs. Cun ningham's brother, Dan Jacobs in Gainesville, Ga., and Mr. Cunning ham's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John F. Cunningham, on Franklin Route 1, . Mrs. Ada Hyatt spent last week with her daughter, Mrs Clyde N. West, at West's Mill. Miss Elizabeth Rochester, who is attending Cecil's Business: college in Asheville, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dcwcy Rochester. William Blaine, a student' at Mars Hill college, spent the week end visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Blaine. Miss Amy Harrison has been confined to her room on account of illness, Mr. and 'Mrs, Herbert E. Church returned from Nashville, Temi., Monday night, where they had spent the past two weeks with Mr,s. Church's mother, Airs. J. H. Rainey. They also visited Mr. Church's father, E. W. Church,, in Franklin, Tcnn. Mr. and Mrs. Joel Tompkins and son, Tommy, have returned from points in Maine, where they visited relatives and friends. Mrs. J. Frank Carmack leaves Friday to visit her( sister, Mrs. Placide ' W. Dover, in Roslyn Heights, N. Y. Major Carmack will remain in Franklin until her return when they will go to Tampa', Fla.', t,j spend the winter months. Joel Tompkins and family are moving from the Peek house to the Neville Sloan house in East Franklin. ' Mrs. Everelte Bradley, of Etna, left Sunday for Winston-Salem, where she will spend a '.week with her children. 1 Rev. and Mrs. G. A. Hovis and Mrs, Don Davis, of Webster, were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Myers, at their home on the Georgia road Friday. Miss Virginia Scott, also a stu dent at Brevard, attended the summer session. Bidwell, of Philadel phia, Pa., and Miss Ida Enloe, of Atlanta, came in Monday for a visit with their brothers, Jeff, Z. B. and C. D. 'Enloe and their fam ilies, at their home on Cartooge- chaye. Rogers Rickman, who has been in the CCC camp stationed at Smokemont, has been visiting his parents, Mr. and' Mrs. Will Rick man at West's Mill. Young Rick man was recently chosen for spe cial training in the CCC radio school at Fort McPherson, in At lanta. Charlie M. Moore has returned from Virginia Beach, Va., after a visit with his ..son, Henlev Moore and family. Miss Carolyn Nolen has been confined to her room for the past week with influenza. Births A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Allen at their home at West's Mill, on Tuesday, Sep tember 19. Mr. and Mrs. John C. Huscus son, of Cartoogechaye, announce the birth of a son, on Thursday, September 21. On Sunday, September 24, a son, was born to Mr. and Mr.s. Grady Carpenter, at their home on Cartoogechaye. Chas. H. Perry Named Federal Parole Officer Charles H. Perry, former owner and manager of the Perry Chevro let company of Franklin, who has been stationed at El Reno, Okla., for the past five years, has been designated as acting chief parole officer at the El Reno federal re formatory. Mr. Perry was serving as jun ion assistant at the time of his appointment. Mr. Perry who made his home in Franklin for a number of years, was married to Miss Kate Baird, daughter of Mrs. Laura Baird and the late Dr. C. D. Baird, while living here.
