The marriage vows were spoken in tne presence or a tew relatives of the bride and groom; the Rev. J. J. Rives, pastor of the Centen ary Methodist .church officiating. She has been .teaching in the schools of North Carolina since her graduation and just prior to her marriage was supervisor of public school music in lloanoke Rapids, where she was also choir director of the First Methodist church and pianist for the Lion's Club. Student musicians represent- ' ing the Roanoke Rapids school have made outstanding records in music contests in competition with contestants from all parts of the .state. Mr. Gibson, son of Mrs. William Ziba Gibson, of Gibson, N. G, and the late "Mr. Gibson, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and of the Columbia University School of Journalism. He Later studied at the University of Paris. He has been employed on newspaper, and magiazines in his native state and in New York, Berlin, Germany; Atlanta and Birmingham and is now director of the Division of Public Health Education of the Alabama State Department of Health. He has con tributed articles to The American Mercury, Good Housekeeping, Hy geia, The Parents' Magazine, So-' cial Forces, South Atlantic Quart ly, and other magazines. He is a member of Sigma Delta Chi. Immediately after the ceremony,' which was followed by. an informal luncheon for those in attendance, Mr. and -Mrs. Gibsqn left for a brief wedding trip to places of in terest in Virginia and North Caro lina. Hall, of Franklin, have announced the mar riage of their daughter. Lucile, to Bill Phillips, also of Franklin; The wedding was solemnized on Saturday, June 1, in Clayton, Ga., . Judge R. C. Ramey officiating. The bride was attired in a navy blue crepe costume and white ac cessories. She is a member of the 1940 graduating class of the Frank lin high school. Mr. Phillips is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Phillips and is employed at the Shell Filling Sta tion. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips plan to make their home in Franklin. , MRS. J. J. CONLEY'S SEVENTY-SEVENTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED Honoring Mrs. J. J. Conley on her 77th birthday, the. children and grandchildren gathered at the home of Mrs. Gonley's son, George Con ley, on Iotla street Sunday, and celebrated with a dinner and fam ily reunion. This was the first time in a number of years when all the children were together at one time. ' . Mrs. Conley was the recipient of many gifts and the good wishes for many more happy birthdays. O'B. Rob inson, Jr., announce the engage ment of their daughter, Grace Moseley to William B. McGuire, Jr., the wedding to take place in the fall. Miss Robinson is, one of Char lotte's prettiest and most popular young members of society. Mr. McGuire is the son of Mrs. W. B. McGuire and the late Mr. McGuire of Franklin. Mrs. Brookshire is a graduate of Franklin high school and of the Franklin ; commercial school. For the past two years she has been employed in the .home demon stration agent office in Franklin. Christian Endeavor. BIBLE SCHOOL OPENED LAST MONDAY A two weeks' Vacation Bible school opened af the Presbyterian church last Monday morning with an enrollment of 30. The teachers are Rev. R. B. DuPree, Miss Anne Black, Miss Peggy Polhill, Miss Lavinia Brown and Miss Sarah Thompson, who is also recreation director, Mrs. DuPree will have charge of the music. . HIGHLANDS MAIL SERVICE IMPROVED The mail service for Highlands has ' improved and there will be two mail deliveries a day from Dillard, and two deliveries a day from Toxaway. For the conven ience of the patrons of the office the new schedules are givei here: Dillard mail due to arrive at Highlands -1 :40 a. m., leaves 10:50 a. m.; arrives Highlands 2.13 p. m., leaves 2:23 p. m. Toxaway mail arrives 9 :30 a. m., leaves 11 a. m. ; arrives 4:30 p. m., leaves 4:40 p. m. Walhalla mail arrives 1 a. m., leaves 12 a. m. RESIDENT PHYSICIAN NOW IN HIGHLANDS Highlands is to have a resident physician during the summer months. S. A. Windsor, M. D., of Pompano, Fla., has opened an of fice upstairs at Highlands Drug Store with morning and afternoon hours. He has practiced medicine in Pompano for the past 15 years, and has heretofore spent the sum mers . in Maine and iNew York state, as his home town is a veg etable center and resort, where, to quote the Doctor, "the sidewalks are roled up during the summer'. Dr. Windsor is a graduate of Rush Medical college . and of the Uni versity of Chicago. He and Mrs. Windsor are spending ' the summer at Hotel Edwards. CHILDS Mrs. Horace Childs of Sarasota, Fla., was honored Tuesday after noon with a miscellaneous shower given by her aunt, Mrs II.- P. P. Thompson at her home on Fourth street. White roses and maiden hair fern were used as flower deco rations in the living room" and din ing room. Mrs. Childs is the former Miss Kathryn Paul, pnly daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Paul of Highlands. She has spent the past several winters in Sarasota, and her wedding in that city was an event of late spring. At the shower and tea Mrs. Childs wore a beoominK white sharkskin model. Mr. and Mrs. Childs will reside at Osprey, Fla., where their new home is now under construction. EPISCOPAL CHURCH SCHOOL REOPENS The Episcopal church school re opened last Sunday morning with an enrollment of 24. This is very gratifying to those in charge, who feel that there may be still other Episcopalians visiting here for the summer who will be glad to know of the opening of the church school. To them a cordial invita tion is extended fpr next Sunday morning. Richard Pearson left last week for Raleigh to take a position in the Poultry Department at N. C. State-college. His brother Howard Pearson, has a position with the State Highway department in Ral eigh. Kichard and Howard were graduated from N. C. State col lege in June. Last Friday's Atlanta papers car ied a writeup of the marriage of Miss Irene Woodruff of Daytona Beach, Fla., formerly of Atlanta, to Alfred B. Michael, Jr.. of Wa- basso,' Fla. Miss King has been a frequent summeij visitor here, and. Mr. Michael's parents have owned a summer home here for a number of years. Dr. and Mrs. A. R. Harold re turned last week from Miami, Fla., and on Tuesday they drove over to Knoxville, Tenn., to meet their friends, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mc Kee, of Los Angeles, Calif, who will spend a week or 10 days with the Harolds. Mrs. A. C. Cook and family of Coconut Grove, Fla., formerly of Monte Carlo, France, are occupy ing the Carlin summer home on Mirror Lake till September 15. Mr. Cook, who is connected with the Pan ' American Airways, and at present ; stationed at Havana, Cuba, will spend the month of July with his family here. Miss Eugenia Duncan of Frank lin is working in the office at Bryson's garage this summer, and will be with Mrs. Annie 'Westbrook and her sister, Miss Fannie G. Lucas. Mr. and Mrs. George Halbritter of Cleveland, Ohio, are expected to arrive this week-end for a short visit with the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Holt. Mrs. Hal britter is the former Miss Jessie Holt Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Owen of Miami, F'la., are building a home on their newly purchased site on Raoul road. Mr. Owen is a con tractor and builder. Miss Eunice Carter of Leo- miruter, Mass., and her sister, Miss Dorothy Carter of Waltham, Mass., arrived Tuesday to spend 10 days with their' aunt, Miss Bernice Durgin, at Brookside camp. Miss Eunice Carter is a commercial artist and does costume jewelry designing. Miss Dorothy Carter is a graduate nurse and connected with the Waltham hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Farns worth of Memphis, Tenn., are at Hotel Edwards while remodeling and renovating is being completed at their home on East Main street. Mr. and Mrs. Emory Cocke of Atlanta were guests at Tricemont Terrace last Sunday, coming up to bring their mother, Mrs. Vela Cocke, ' who will be at the hotel for the season. Visiting Mrs. J. H. Smith at her home on Satulah Mountain for Fourth of July, week-end will be her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. H. O. ' Schoolfield, of Mullins, S. C, and another aunt, Mrs. R. B. James, of Danville, Va. Guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Davis for the week of July 4th are their grandchildren, Mrs. Claude Clenney and two children, and W. S. Steele and Angus Steele, of Ft. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Edwards of Pampa, Texas., are visiting Mr. and Airs. M. D. Edwards in Horse Cove, and other relatives in High lands. Colonel and Mrs. W. H. Nollman and daughters, Misses Betty Jane and Catharine of Sebriner. Fla.. have opened their summer home, spnngdale , on Chestnut street.
