SCHOOL RE-OPENS Highlands' school re-opened Mon day morning, January 27, after be ing closed five weeks; two weeks through the holiday season, and the three succeeding weeks by the county board of health because of the widespread measles: epidemic. P. T. A. TO MEET The monthly meeting of the Parent-Teacher Association will ibe held Tuesday afternoon, February 4, in the science .room of tfie school at 3:45 o'clock. The refreshment committee for the social part of the program, which will precede the business session, is composed of Mrs. H. P. P. Thompson, Mrs T. M. Keener and Rev. R. B. Du Pree. No meeting was held in January. Postmaster C. C. Potts. ' Mi&s. Dorothy Wright held high score in the ladies' singles, and Mrs." Thomas Fagg of Franklin, second high. At the Keno party held at the school, lunch room . on the night of the 23rd for the Foundation fifty very lovely prizes were given. .Miss Jessie Keener won the first grand prizej a beautiful table lamp, and the second grand prize, a large chocolate cake, went to Charlie McDowell. The amount cleared from the keno party was $17.50, making a total from the two benefits of $33.40, t which will be added the returns from the square dance at Helen's Barn and the movie at Highlands School Theatre held Wednesday and Thursday, nights of this week. . Of the 140 coin cards mailed in the county by Chairman Potts, the first to be filled and returned was that of C. F. Redden, Sr., whose card held slots for coins in the amount of $2.00. WILSON-T ALLEY Announcement is made of the marriage of Miss Velma Wilson to Louie Talley on Saturday, Jan uary 4, in Clayton, Ga. Accompany ing the couple to Clayton were 'Mr. and Mrs. Zeke Shuler. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mack Wilson of the, Clear Creek section. Her wedding cos tume was of navy blue crepe with which she wore white accessories. Air. Talley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elsey Talley of Satolah, Ga. and has for some time been employed by a lumber company in the state of Washington, .where he and Mrs. Talley expect to make their home. RALPH THOMPSON DIES IN ANDERSON, S. C. Relatives here were notified of the death of Ralph Thompson on Saturday, January 25, at his home in Anderson, S. C. He was a nephew of Irvin Rice and the iMisses Darthula and Susan Rice of Highlands. He had been ill for several months. Surviving are his wife; his mother, Mrs. Florence Thompson; a sister, Mrs. Edna Barton, and two brothers, Fred and Warren, all of Anderson. FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. MARK BURRELL uneraFl services for . Mrs. Mark Burrell, 52, were held Sunday morning, January 26, at 11 o'clock at the Clear Creek Baptist church. Rev. J. O. NiXj pastor of the church officiated, assisted by Rev. Brown of near Athens. Ga. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pall bearers were Bernice McCall, Philo Neely, Carl Chastain, Lawrence Bryson, Bryan McCall and Zeke Shuler. Mrs. Burrell. died at her home early Saturday morning following a short illness of measles and pneu monia. She was a member of the Baptist church. Surviving are her husband; one daughter, Mrs. John Reese, three sons, Shirley, Tearley and Frank Burrell; her mother Mrs. Belle Bryson, and one sister Mrs. Ed Chastain. ; DISTINGUISHED FLORIST VISITS T. C HARBISON Thomas C. Harbison, landscape gardener had a distinguished vis itor last Sunday in the person of Jack R. Rarvan, of the" Karvan Florist company of New York City, and together they spent the day in the woods in the interest of evergreens. Mr. Kervan was particularly interested in galax leaves and leucothoe sprays, and left an order for 20,000 of the lat ter with Mr. Harbison, who says the cutting of the sprays in no wise harms the shrubs, as the part clipped represents a year's growth, which in another year's time regrows leaving no scar. - Mr. Harbison inherits his ; love for landscape gardening from his father, the late Prof. T.. G. Harbi son, who was a noted botanist. The ground at a number of the newer summer homes here have been landscaped by him and older ones improved. Among those he ha-s more recently landscaped are the Raymond A. Kline place at the Country Club, the Dr. Fred Hodg son place on Bearpen Mountain, and closer in town, the. home of the Misses Hammond on Spring street, all Atlanta people. Mr. Gervan was a week-end guest at Hotel Edwards and from here expected to visit Alabama, Texas, California and Mexico, looking for anything that might he used in his florist business as well as for new ideas in using what ever he finds. "Britain Can't Pay" Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr., tells the House Foreign Affairs Committee in Washington that the British "just haven't got" dollars enough to buy the war equipment they must get from the U. S. He said they could pay for goods already ordered but would not be able to pay for ''any-, thing like what they need." MISS GILDER ENTERTAINS Miss Sara Gilder entertained the card club with a bridge-luncheon last Wednesday. The luncheon table was covered with a cloth of exquisite Italian cut work and centered with a flowering St. Paulia in a silver bowl.' White candles in silver holders were al so used. Luncheon guests in addi tion to the club members : were Mrs. Gilbert Beecher and Mrs. Jack Wilcox, who did not remain for the bridge game. In the several progressions Miss Bernice Durgin held high score and was awarded the prize. Mrs. Wilton H. Cobb was final winner , of the traveling prize. Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Ander son and their four attractive young daughters left last week for their annual winter's stay in Hollywood, Fla. They were accompanied by Mrs. Martha Day. Rev, and Mrs. J. G. Benfield spent several days in Lenoir last week where they were called be cause of the illness of Mr. Ben field's son, whose condition is re ported to be much improved. Miss Peggy Thompson returned Thursday to ' Queen's College at Charlotte after a few days' visit here with her mother following the mid-term examinations. Miss . Sarah Thompson takes her vaca tion on the 11th and 12th of Feb rurary when she will attend the University of Tennessee dances at Knoxville. Dr. and Mrs. B. E. Fernow of Clemson college have purchased a building .site fronting on Mirror Lake in the Sullivan sub-division. Dr. and Mrs. Fernow were week end guests of Prof. W. L. Lippin oott, also of Clemson college, at his home here on Mirror Lake. Born to Mr. and Mrs. George Cleaveland a daughter, Georgia Lewellyn, on Sunday, January 10 at their home here. Spending the day in Asheville Monday were Mrs. O. E. Young. Earle Young, Jr., Miss Sara Gilder and Mrs. Wilton H. Cobb. Mrs. John (Creasie) Jenkins' friends will be pleased to learn that she has improved sufficiently from a three weeks' illness to be able to sit tip for a part of the day. Cleveland Cabe who has been suffering from a severe attack of measles at his houe on the Dillard road for the past two weeks, is reported to be very much im proved.
