U. 8 p. m. Sermon. PARALYSIS CAMPAIGN NETS $144.19 The proceeds from the Infantile Paralysis Drive in Macon county netted $144.19. County chairman Jack H. Potts extends his thanks to everyone who worked in the campaign, and also to. those, who contributed in any way toward this very worthy cause. MARETT GROCERY NEW QUARTERS Extensive alterations and im provements have been made to the O. W. Marett grocery store build ing since its removal from the corner ot Main and Fourth streets to the rear of the property front ing on Fourth street. The build ing has been ceiled overhead with grey celotex tile, and the walls re finished with ivory-colored heaver board. All old shelves have been taken out and replaced with new shelving of native chestnut wood, and tables and counters repainted. The sidewalk in front of the store has been filled m to street level and later will be paved. The outside of the building is to be repainted in the early spring. PRESBYTERIAN AUXILIARY MEETS WITH MRS. COBB The February meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary of the Presby terian church was held at the home of Mrs. Wilton H. Cobb last week. The president, Mrs. Sidney Mc Carty, Jr., presided. Miss Ruth Carter had charge of the program topic "Stewardship", and was as sisted by Mrs. Cobb, Mrs. DuPree and Miss Dorothea Harbison. A special self-denial offering was taken for Home and Foreign Missions. Refreshments were served by the hostess. CARD CLUB WITH MRS. HALL Mrs. Tudor N. Hall was hostess to the Wednesday Card Club at a delightful bridge-luncheon last week. The luncheon was served on card tables in the living room, which was attractively decorated with forsythia. Favors were dainty boutonnieres of lace and tiny seashells. The seashell motif was also featured in the score cards and prizes. Mrs. 'C. C. Potts won high score prize and Mrs. F. C. Hentz again winner of the traveling prize. Three tables of players enjoyed tin occasion. Mr. and Mm. W. H. Carrington of Charleston, S. C. liave pur chased a summer home site in the Sullivan sub-division fronting on Mirror Lake. The' sale was made through the S. T. Marett Real Estate Agency. Mr. Carrington is an engineer on the Andrews dam project. ' Mr. and Mrs. G. D. Edwards visited their daughter, Miss Vir ginia Mae Edwards, at a Brevard hospital on Sunday. Miss Edwards, a student at Brevard college, is improving from an illness of sev tral days. Going over with Mr. and Mrs. Edwards were Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Jackson. James C. W. Mitchell, who has been visiting her father,: W . S. Davis and Mrs. Davis for several days, returned to her home in East Point, da., on Wednesday. Another daughter, Mrs. A. D. Bol ton, of Commerce, da., will .remain here until Sunday when she will be joined by Mr. Bolton for' the week-end. Mrs. R. B. DuPree and small son Bobby, are visiting Mrs. DuPre.c'.s sister, Mrs. R. F. Baker, m Char lotte this week. , Frank H. Potts, Jack Pots and R. B. DuPree left Sunday tor a week's trip through Honda. .They will visit Steve 1'otts at West Palm Beach. Henry Wright was to have been one of the party, but a foot injury prevented his going, and instead he js spending a few. days in the. hospital. Forming a congenial party at tending a dance at Western Caro lina Teachers' college last Friday evening were the Misses Maurine Davis, Nancy Hines and Frances Ormand, Henry Zoellner, Kenneth' Davis and Newman Ormand. Miss Davis' ssiter and brother are stu dents at the cojlege. . Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Marett left last Thursday for their annual winter's stay of several weeks in Sarasota, Fla. Mrs. Martha McCloud continues seriously ill at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Holt. Marine Corps Drive For v Personnel In- crease Under Way A drive for the recruiting of a special class of reserves, for im mediate assignment to active duty with the regular marine corps is now under way. Qualifications for enlistment in this particular class of reserves arc the same as for the regular marine corps. Applicants must be between the aires of 18 and 2s, in sound physical condition, have the equi valent of an eighth grade educa tion or better, and be of good moral character. Immediately upon enlistment the reserve is assigned to active duty anH will remain (in active dulv for the duration of the present limited national emergency. He will be sent to the marine lwrracks at Parris Island, S.'C, for training and instructions -the same as .one who enlists in the regular marine corps. Duties of the reserves will be the same as that of the regulars; Ratings and promotions will be made in the .same ratio with the reculars. Anv time in the future that the authorized strength of the regular marine corps is increased this class of reserve will be given the opportunity to transfer Recruiting offices are maintained in the post office buildings of Raleigh, Winston-Salem, and Char lotte.
