LAST RITES HELD FOR IRVIN ELIAS RICE Funeral services for Irvin Elias Rice were held at Shortoff Sun day afternoon at the home of his son, Lewis C. Rice, with the Rev. H. T. Bridgman, pastor of the Presbyterian church officiating. In terment was in Highlands ceme tery. Active pallbearers were Elmer McDowell, Sr.; Wendell McKin ney, . Frank Norton, S. P. Pierson, J. E. Potts and F. H. Potts. . Mr. Rice died Saturday morn ing in Hendersonville at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. G. Ben nett. Hender sonville'; Lewis C. Rice, Highlands ; Clyde C. Rice, Asheville. Surviv ing also are three brothers, Ed win T. Rice, Bonner's Ferry, Idaho ; Lake C. Rice, Stockton, Calif.; Luther W. Rice, Highlands ; four sisters, Mrs. i Florence. Thompson, Anderson, S. C; Mrs. A. N. Lew is, Onley, Va. ; Miss Darthula Rice and Miss Susan Kice, Highlands, and seven grandchildren. MRS. NORTON PASSES IN SEBR1NG, FLA. News - was received here last week of the death of Mrs. Roberta L. Morton at her winter home in Sabring, Fla., on December 24. The ; body was taken to Athens, Ga., her former home for burial. Mrs. Morton had operated Pier son Inn here as a summer hotel for the past seven years. AUTO ACCIDENT FATAL TO MRS. DYE , Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Marett were in receipt of a letter Monday tell ing of the death of Mrs. H. P, Dye last Friday at her home in West Palm Beach, Fla., the result of injuries received in an auto mobile accident. - At one time the Dyes owned a summer - home and considerable acreage here, but since Captain Dye's death a few years ago the greater part of their Highland property has been sold. CHESTER WRIGHT RETURNS HOME Chester Wright, who enlisted in the U. S. Air Corps in January of this year, has received an hon orable discharge from service be cause of an injury to his knee while playing basketball several years ago. Wright was stationed for some time at McCord Field, Tacoma, Wash., and but for the recurring knee trouble was in line for an officer's commission the past October. For the present he is here visiting his mother, Mrs, S. A. Wilson. MR. AND MRS. W. S. DAVIS HAVE FAMILY PARTY Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Davis en tertained with a family Christmas dinner party ait their home here last Sunday. The guests included four generations of the Davis fam ily and were Mr. and'Mrs..,W. W. Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Gibson and baby Mitchell of East Point. Ga.: Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Bolton, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Bolton and Mr. and Mrs. Milton Nix of Commerce, Ga. Mrs. Mitchell remained tor a few days' visit with Mr. and Mrs. Davis. . FAMILY DINNER AT EDWARDS HOME Mr. and Mrs.. A. G. Edwards held their annual Christmas din ner at the Edwards home in Horse Cove on December 25. Following the usual custom, the grandchil dren were seated at ope long table and Mr. and Mrs. Edwards and their sons and daughters at an other. A fruit arrangement with Christmas decorations were used as centerpieces. Hemlock boutonjiieres with silver and gold cones tied with gold ribbon, from which gleamed tiny lighted candles, mark ed the places at the tables. Those present for occasion were: Mr. and Mrs. W. W. L cull On Exhibit At Press An anti-aircraft shell fired at Nazi planes over Suez is on ex- French machine gun bullets from veteran of the Libyan cam- paign in Africa. These trophies of the war were brought home by Richard R. Johoson. The shell was fired while his. ship, the Bienville, was unloading lend- lease supplies in a Suez harbor and a soldier in Cairo gave him the sample of loaded bullets. He has been in the United States Army since July.
